Sound Cards

Looking at getting a decent soundcard for my PC - what I do
is listen to a lot of MP3's/FLAC's, and play some games (CS,
WoW, HL2, et al).

One big requirement is sounds need to be crisp; if any of
you are mac nuts, I'm happy as hell with the sound output on
my Powerbook - every sound is reproduced perfectly and it's
an absolute dream to listen to high quality audio on it.
I'm yet to find an affordable sound card for the PC that
sounds anywhere like it.

I'm not a huge Creative fan (their drivers fucking suck), so
I don't think I want an Audigy but I can be convinced
otherwise.

I went out and bought a Chaintech AV-710, which uses the VIA
ENVY 24HT-S chipset, which has rave reviews all over the
net. I'm not happy with the bastard - high/low frequencies
don't sound crisp. Autechre, for example, sounds fucking
terrible on this soundcard.

I'd also like it to run with games nicely. It seems the
Chaintech is a bloody 'software dsp' card meaning it does
all processing on the host CPU. It really affects games
performance :-(

What do you use/recommend?

(By the way, if any of you do own the Chaintech card and
disagree with me - let me know. I suspect the card might be
faulty, but it probably just sucks.)

for games, i'd go with the new audigy 4. As far as
making/listening to music, I don't know what to say. Just
dont buy an m-audio ozone.

isn't the ozone a midi keyboard?

soundstorm is still software dsp though, right? happy with
my motherboard anyway; athlon 64 chip, older socket style
(not 939 or whatever it is), asus k8v deluxe. it's got an
onboard soundmax which i swear sounds better than this
chaintech i bought, which is bizarre. still sounds bad,
though.

i've got an m-audio audiophile 2496, sounds pretty crisp and clear to
me. cheap too, for what it is.

anybody here got a powerbook and can contrast and compare
what their pc sound card sounds like compared to it?

i can't fault the audio on my powerbook one bit - it sounds
/so/ clear - high/low end is reproduced wonderfully. this
is especially evident with audio such as autechre, et al -
rapid high/low pitched noise sounds like crap on most pc
sound cards, but it sounds fantastic on the powerbook.

i think this has actually ruined things for me because i
thought my live! sounded fantastic until i started using
half decent headphones with my powerbook. now i'm finding
it impossible to find a sound card that can match the
quality... :(

I owned an E-MU 0404 for about a week. I primarily run the
newest version of FL Studio and found that the latency to be
horrific or the CPU usage suddenly shot thru the roof. It
may have been just my machine but I read online about many
others who have had problems with this card. During that
time there web site to update the card appearantly did not
exist.
But then again, what do you expect for a sound card around
the $100 price range.

don't get anything by creative (well maybe emu, but it's
independent unit).

asio drivers are pretty lame. and everything else is pretty
basic. maybe with kX-drivers things are more flexible but i
reckon my livedrive doesn't work with those

are the audigy 2's no good for floops-style music
production?

btw, i have a nforce board and the onboard sound absolutely
sucks. maybe i got a bad one, but i just figured that's what
you get from onboard audio.

sorry for the very late reply... the Ozone is a midi
keyboard, yes, similar to the Ozone 8 (looks exactly like it
except the Ozone has more knobs). It's also got a
24bit/96khz recording interface with line in, stereo in, and
XLR-mic in... The problem with it is the USB was never quite
fast enough (would get clicks and pops) and, more
importantly, the piece of shit just flat out died recently.
It was NEVER once mistreated and after not being used for a
few months it just decided to up and stop working. I was
never really happy with how my finished results sounded
through it, even when it was working, so I'm not really too
heartbroken that it's useless now, but I am pissed off that
I spent money on it in the first place.
