i've always been really into really plain ambient and also
good piano and violin/cello based stuff.

i was wondering if you had any recomendations on this kind
of stuff. maybe something like max richter, yann tiersen,
erik satie, hans zimmer (haven't heard much by him though)
or something similar.

thanks.

eluvium - an accidental memory in the case of death (solo
piano with a satie feel)

you've probably heard them, but the two (mostly solo piano)
albums that harold budd made with brian eno are great too
(the pearl and plateaux of mirror).

you are probably aware of RACHEL'S. if not, best album:
music for egon schiele. i'd say. piano, cello and viola.

i haven't heard much by glass except for koyanqatsi (don't
know about the spelling) i think. i'll check this stuff
out.

i've got lambent materials by eluvium, it's nice stuff. i
was always planning on getting those brian eno and harold
budd albums.

i hadn't heard about this album that you talk about welt.
the description sounds good, i'll check it out.

thanks guys.

hm, i found out about Giacinto Scelsi recently - a
few things to be found on slsk.

i've not heard much, the piano and cello pieces i'm not too
fond of, but i love the pieces for violin / viola and an
especially good piece is
Elegia per Thy, for viola & cello (1958). he uses the
stings in interesting ways a lot of the time, creating these
droney/scratching/grating pieces. there are more
conventional pieces too though.
i found out about him from the deathprod person talking
about him (because i'm cool) and you can definately see the
influences if you've heard deathprod, which is very serious
sounding atmospheric dark/cloudy ambient.

i know very little about this type of thing really, yet,
though, yay!

rachel's describe themselves as "avantgarde pop". they use
classical instrumentation but it aint classical music
really. they're more influenced by indie-music, sonic youth
etc. however, very beautiful and emotional. slightly artsy,
but not pretentious or lofty.

Rachels' "Music for egon schiele" is lovely, lovely, lovely.
"Selenography" is good as well, but it doesn't feel as
well-rounded somehow, even though the sounds and textures
are better developed.

I don't know how much you're into the more arty-farty
avant-gardey end of modern composition, but one of my
personal favourites is "voyage that never ends" by stefano
scodanibbio. There's an excerpt of it here if
you're interested, his cello and contrabass stuff is
amazing.

i've always been more into strings than piano but everything
with a nice kind of ambient feeling to it appeals to me as
well. lots of avant-grade is good too.

i'll try to check as much of this stuff out as i can.

thanks for the replies.
