no. it's a breakdance version of Gene Kelly singing in the
rain.

no, its a car commercial with gene kelly singing "singing in
the rain"... but remixed.

youll see.

offline Zephyr Twin from ΔΔΔ on 2005-02-02 09:04 [#01485007]

oh my god that was so fucking awesome! it's all CGI once
it's remixed though, right?

God, I wish those moves could be real.

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-02-02 09:05 [#01485008]

I think they removed Gene Kelly digitally, then bluescreened
a breakdancer over the empty set, then super imposed Gene
Kelly's face back on the dancer.

That's my guess.

yeah that could be... it was hot as hell seeing a honky
white guy like gene kelly doing those moves, pity they
didn't just raise him from the dead and get him to do the
commercial himself... I hear rigor mortis + breakdance =
best Robot moves ever.

offline Zephyr Twin from ΔΔΔ on 2005-02-02 09:10 [#01485010]

I think this could be... yep it's my favorite car commercial
ever.

that doesn't play with quicktime alternative

:-(

but seriously you should try to get regular quicktime or
something else that plays .mov files because this commercial
rocks!

zeus: thanks for the link

god damnit I want a full version of that song too!!

i need to learn how to do that dive and roll move. that's
pretty sweet.

I need to learn how to do all those moves...

hey, does anyone remember that vid of the kid dancing to
hasty boom alert? He does some similar style robot moves in
that; I want to watch it again now after seeing this. Plus,
good dancing to good electronica rocks!

offline xf from Australia on 2005-02-02 09:24 [#01485028]

qt alternative is the codecs and stuff for windows, lets you
play quicktime files without needing quicktime.

took your word for it though, and copied it to my mac. heh,
it's neat, nice.

see, bits of idm /are/ starting to infiltrate and influence
modern music - and if it reuslts in stuff like this, that's
rad. i realise that idm has been used often as background
music and the like, but that's not the case here :)

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-02-02 09:24 [#01485029]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

didn't peewee herman do that sort of move when he wrecked
his bike in front of the bmx kids at the end of big
adventure
?

that was triumphant.

offline xf from Australia on 2005-02-02 09:26 [#01485030]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

(arguably this isn't idm though, but likely was influenced
by it - whatever idm is.).

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-02-02 09:27 [#01485035]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

peewee herman was one of gene kelly's biggest influences.

true.

but that's strange, because I seem to have qt alternative
myself, as I have a PC and the movie played right in the IE
browser without opening up a quicktime frontend... so I
dunno what problem you're experiencing but I'm glad you had
a mac to watch it on too. :)

offline xf from Australia on 2005-02-02 09:34 [#01485046]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

the quicktime plugin will do that, that's probably what you
have. qt alternative will install that too, but let you
open it in applications such as winamp, media player, etc.

"(arguably this isn't idm though, but likely was influenced
by it - whatever idm is.)"

besides, IDM is essentially boundless in it's definition
now... or maybe it never really meant anything anyway... but
I think if it has a synth in it and it was made on a
computer, it's IDM. That's why I don't really like the term
much.

I did some googling and I found this

The song which accompanies it is a remix of the original,
created by dance music duo Mint Royale.

It is great when an iconic film moment is fused with the new
hip urban sport of breakdancing and used in a non cynical
way to sell motor cars. It is what both Gene Kelly and the
original poppers and hiphop pioneers would have wanted.

Well done, Volkswagen!

Fuck you commie shitbags, it's entertaining so don't think
so hard about it you lentil salad eating hemp shirt wearing
hairy armpit benders. If it bothers you every time memorable
moments are referenced you might as well choke on your
dreadlocks, you bearded bolshevik sandal wearing loony.

No offence

Rather than being a kneejerker who sees the image of Gene
Kelly's face plastered onto someone else's body and being
made to do fashionable dances to a fashionably modern remix
of Singin' in the Rain before selling their car, and
thinking it's cool and amazing?

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-02-03 08:26 [#01486150]

i thought it was a very nicely done commercial. good
concept and really good execution.

it'll probably run during the superbowl, and if it's not one
of the best comercials i'll be pleasantly surprised.

sorry, but i found this pretty sad. rewriting history,
drudging up the dead for the singular purpose of selling
cars. that's soulless shit..

this is manufactured cool. i don't understand why (almost)
everyone seems to love this. it's really disrespectful in my
eyes. what's next, gandhi doing ads for mcdonalds? john
lennon selling mutual funds?

"what's next, gandhi doing ads for mcdonalds? john lennon
selling mutual funds?"

yeah, now that I think about it, that ad really crosses some
moral lines.. I wonder how they got the rights to his
"body."'

I wonder what gene kelly would say about the golf gti.. he'd
probably hate it hahaha.
