Electronic music is vast and broad genre, so I can understand why you have to break it up into different categories like Trance, Ambient, Breakcore, Dub, etc. But seriously, IDM isn't even a sub category. Its just a replacement for 'experimental' really... Right? You can have IDM Rock, IDM rap (glitch hop?), IDM anything right? IDM isn't even fucking dance music half the time for christ sake, despite 'dance' being in the name.
Whos the fuck-face who came up with this?
I dont want another 'idm = pretentious wankshot" thread. I propose this thread be used to hunt down the creator of 'idm' and be killed. Or at least get him to sign up on this msg board and we can make him feel like a cunt. Whos with me?

idm, the term, was invented by the guy who, when he was said to have listened to dance music, he said "its not dance!, its intelligent music, intelligent dance music!" thus the term was born out of a man who, at the time listened to a new kind of music, but was far too a musical elitist. ironic though those that same attitude is so pervasive in IDM to this day!

I think as qrter said earlier, no one uses this term apart from the people that bang on about how wanky it is. Stop using it and it'll eventually fuck off, along the way of Skiffle and Acid Jazz.

my problem with it is, it does not describe the music, but more implies that the very act of listening to said music somehow makes you more intelligent than those that turn a blind eye to it, which is shit.

maybe the media popularized it, but if you think about it, it was probably created by some group of people who found out about warp or one of the early electronic music labels and used the term to deflect the techno or dance music moniker, because they thought it was soundhow smarter than those types of music.

Whoever did come up with it deserves a fucking thrashing, why not kill a whole swathe of music by calling it "Clever Music". Warp did themselves no favours by calling the groundbreaking compilation "Artificial Intelligence" and Rephlex continue the farce with their Braindance bollocks.

"more computationally complex and detailed music" is what I think of it. People at wikipedia just lumped together everything that was in the "idm mailing list" as idm, since that mailing list was its origin or something. Given that THAT definition seems to be the more accepted one.. I want to make a new genre with the definition of the first quote I made.. that way it'd be easier to find obscurish gems like crunch 1. and marion by michael fakesch.

a brain is an objective thing, and rephlex might be using to simply imply that it makes your brain dance - hence everyone has a brain, and everyone enjoys music *BAM* music that stimulates your brain - but others might take it as they take idm, simply stated - smarty music - music for computer nerds or what have you, if you dont listen or dont like it, the name implies you dont understand it.

its funny how the origin of the name is obscured by alot of revisionist history. the person who said the name came from the hyperreal mailing list is right. it just the name somebody came up with for the mailing list whose purpose was discussing aphex, autechre and other music that didn't quite fit other genres at the time.
its kind of akin to a genre being called "xltronic"
why did it stick? nobody came up with anything better to lump together artists who are tangentially related to aphex and autechre.

I think IDM is an area where electronic artist can make music that is skewed a bit more towards dance, but without having to fall in a predictable and monotonous category such as trance, house, ect. The genre leaves itself open to whatever experimentation the artist wants to do with dance oriented music.
I think we are trying to hard to define everything in electronic music. Electronic music is absolutly limitless, so the genres are never going to end. Nothing belongs in one place. It's music. That's what it is.
IDM is great because it isn't just one thing. It doesn't have to be identified or sound a certian way according to the definition of it's genre. The sounds can be vast and approach dance music from every angle.
