the russian director. does anyone here like his work? i was very impressed by andrei rublyov so I went on a binge: sacrifice .. the stalker .. solaris (the original, not the george clooney remake!). and i haven't been disappointed. amazing capacity to transfigure human spirituality into landscape, atmosphere.. i still haven't seen nostalghia. my local video rental store doesn't have it :(

my personal faves are Stalker and Mirror.

"solaris" is super, just super.
I've had "stalker" for some time, haven't come around to watching it yet though.

it's being offered by the U of A next fall... it's not all Tarkovsky, but it's okay, because the other two directors we will be focusing on are Stan Brakhage (who also rules a great deal), and Hans-Jurg Syderberg (who i know absolutely nothing about)....

I've seen Stalker. It made me feel quite weird, which means that I liked it a lot, I guess.

I have seen his "zjerkalo" ("the mirror") - excellent, emotional stuff, but I do not think his art is exactly my cup of tea :).. prefer Lynch's darkness, Fellini's perversion and Kar Wai's rush. Tarkowski's too sad in a way I do not like.

Solaris and Stalker are bloody brilliant. I have Nostalghia recorded off the telly, but it's on an unmarked tape that I can't seem to find.
Anyone in the Los Angeles area might want to check out the Egyptian movie theatre in Hollywood, as I heard they will be showing all of his films there in a month or two.
