what made it so good is that people who aren't hyped about
afx as much as some of us, didn't get into those silly afx
vs ae (eventhough we were teasing them hehe) debates but
actually stated their honest opinion on the music itself :)

dude, specializing in artificial intelligence!!
Man, GEB is definately for you. Although you might find some
of the things in it elementary.
I just finished high school, and plan on doing computer
engineering at university (I wanted to do software
engineering, but I dont think Ill get in, I might be able to
transfer). I've written about 8 hours of electronic music.
None I would really consider worthy of a public audience.
But I've just used fruityloops and reason, which I'm now
proving to be pretty adept at.
I want to learn to use Max/MSP, I'm pretty familiar with C,
and C#, I'd really like to be able to write my own
synthesizers and the like, but Its hard to keep myself
working on any one project for extended periods of time, I
lose interest after a while. Apart from computer
programming, I think I am getting pretty good at drum
programming... i just need to get some really nice samples.

This is the most I've ever posted in any one thread... so
yeah, I agree, best thread ever.

yeah I'm studying CS at a pretty good school, it's fucking
awesome =) I actually enjoy my math classes more but that's
because I came here with lots of experience programming..
it'll catch up soon.

8 hours is a lot! When I do write my lame synthesizer, it's
not going to know anything about anything: waveforms, pitch
systems, whatever. All it will know is how to send bits to
the audio device. Anyway I'll fuck with it a lot, it'll
probably always sound shitty. I also have trouble working
on a program in my free time for an extended period, but
hopefully this will go well.. who knows.

(on your next post) yeah I rarely see you here, nice
chattin' with ya

I read a lot of stuff here, and I've been coming for quite a
while. I just generally stay silent.
I've had a look at writing synthesizers before, there are
some nice sites out there.
a synth in Max/MSP
Max/MSP website
8 hours is a fair bit... I've been making music for a year
now. But.. still.. I'd prefer 2 hours of great music, rather
than 8 hours of crap to kinda good music. But we can't all
be as dedicated as RDJ.
Are you a squarepusher fan?

not really, but I haven't heard much. I tried to lilsten to
ultravisitor but that cheering shit drives me up the wall.
I'll grab one of his big albums one of these days.

I'm a fan of his albums: Hard Normal Daddy and Feed me weird
things. More recently I got into burning'n tree... but thats
more for the insane drums, which you can either love, or
they can drive you insane. I think the song Male Pill Part
13 from Hard Normal Daddy is awesome.

sneakattack, I don't know if aphex is a Brahms fan, but I do
know he likes Les Baxter. You should check him out. The
piano sounds more like him than classical.

oh I wasn't implying aphex listens to brahms, it was just a
sort of generic *invoke classical god* statement. I simply
really ended up thinking of classical music while analyzing
xmd5a.

I've never heard of Les Baxter, thanks for the tip! I'll
look that up.. intereesstitnngngngggg

my opinion:

right now I am hiper jealous cos I didnt buy the analord 10

I will buy all the rest from now on

can I order 1 and 2 now?

10 was ok.
2 nice tracks... not mindblowing average for aphex but
excellent comapred to anything else

I would like to have spent those 40 pounds if I had had the
money

well, they said the analord 10 will be available in normal
vinyl as well...personally i don't think it's going to be
much of a difference in quality, unless you have best hi fi
system..that binder (in case you really want it) could be a
problem though..

Aphex isn't pp but he does have the most commercial appeal

uhm. RDJ is an artist and probably does not give a shit what
other people think about his music. He publishes it because
he need to eat and live. It is what it is - an art, a
statement, a whole fkcuing new world. Made of electronica,
classical structures, commercial marriages, ambient holes
etc... and al things we cannot name. It is not possible to
please everyone, but it is not, and should not be, any
artist's way of thinking. :)

analord is an amazing world, ,I am starting to feel lost in
it. Beautifully lost. :)

ive never really felt the need to analyse an rdj record more
than analord, there are definate classical undertones even
to the 'untrained' ear i reckon. although this would be
enjoyable and i wish i knew more about making music, i feel
there is a point where it can be technically brilliant but
sound shit (a lot of vsnare imo). i played analord to my gf
and she quite liked parts of the songs, hated the piano - it
sounded shit apparantly, and then claimed her bro used to
make stuff like that. i couldnt be bothered explaining you
know? how frustrating and delightful afx is!

that surprises me really, i'd honestly think that piano part
would be the most likeable part for the people not familiar
with aphex. so beautifully packed in..ohh

that's pretty much the beauty of richard's music. it sounds
like it's not meant to be there but it sounds perfectly. i
got that same feeling first time throgh, but i got this
really fuzzy feeling in my head second time around :)

yea, i couldnt agree more, it gets better with every listen,
and the piano is a lovely addition to the non-linearity. i
cant stop playing analord 10 on repeat. only broken now and
again by efforts from the board. :)

just another note though, i really think rdj can be
repetitive, e.g. fingerbib takes forever to kick in, i know
it adds to it but it seems a bit too long. same with acrid
avid jam shred a little bit, and many other times. its
normally deliberarte or sounds nice or is tweaked a little,
but still a tiny bit repetitive.

yes ofcourse, there are also plenty of his songs that don't
appeal to me, and plenty that aren't perfect, but these two
analord ones are just perfect for my ears :)

mrgypsum, well, i guess almost all ambient is abstract when
compared to non ambient stuff :) but since there wasn't many
ambient electronica albums at that time i can imagine it
must have sounded quite abstract yeah..
