back everything up on cds and format the drive...in case you
have two partitions keep stuff on the other while you delete
the system one.

if you have multiple drives, format those first.

fdisk can also be useful, I think... you should probably
remove any partitions before installing xp since it works on
some different filesystem and shit...

- backup anything you'd like to keep on CD/DVD/2nd partition
(favs, email, MP3s, movies etc.)
- boot computer with bootdiskette, created in windows
(config panel > software > boot disk (I think)). dunno if
the windows ME CD allows you to format a drive, the XP CD
does.
- format c: /q
- reboot with ME CD in drive
- install windows ME
- install all your apps back

yeah, when you insert the setup cd of Xp it allows you to
format & delete partitions. i always keep my docs on one
partition so i don't need to write a bazillion cd's (i DO
back up crucial stuff of course)

In my experience, the best way to go about this by far is to
throw the entire computer away and buy a new one.

But you absolutely must copy all of your "drivers" for your
sound/video/modem cards etc. to cd.. believe me.. not doing
that will be a humungous bitch. Then you need to have, say,
windows 98 SE and the boot disk for it. Then exit windows to
dos, or the command prompt or whatever and type "format c:"
Then from my experience, you just put in the boot disk and
the windows cd, then find the setup file by searching, say
"d:" then typing "dir/p" or "c:" and "dir/p". Then just type
setup when you find it and the rest should be explanatory.

Are you people incapable of reading? the man doesnt want to
keep his files.

w M w: these days we have the internet for that, for the
drivers. just make sure you have a cd to get internet
accccessss running.

hmm.. what about having the driver for the modem card to get
the internet working in the first place. Finding the right
driver is really difficult on the internet unless you have
some computer know how. Once you find the correct
manufacturer's site or whatever, you have to pick the right
one from a selection of like 100 choices. And for me it
wasn't very apparent which one was right.

Get a Windows 98 Start up floppy disk. I think you can get
one at Bootdisk.com. Once made, put the floppy in and reset
pc. Start in Bootable from CD and Floppy mode.

Type- Format C:

This will Wipe Hard Drive.

Put Windows XP or ME in. For ME, to load type Setup
XP should boot itself when you take floppy out and restart,

for xp:

insert windows xp cd. chang bios (F10 or DEL) so that first
boot device = CD/DVD. save settings, restart comp. press key
on boot when requested. wait for loading of xp files. press
R on keyboard for repair console. log onto account, i.e.
press 1 or 2 or 3 then return, accoriding to the list shown
above. then type 'format c:' or whatever drive applies.
obviously dont include the apostrophises

Yes, you would want to run this on your japscat drives
before giving your old computer to your mother.
