http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=830

how cool , it's main selling point is that you can't even
choose what songs you want to hear! I wonder what genius
came up with that idea...

"With most flash-memory music players users must use tiny
displays and complicated controls to find their music; with
iPod shuffle you just relax and it serves up new
combinations of your music every time you listen.”

this play button is too complicated for me! i can identify
the "next track" icon, but somehow, i just can't figure out
how to press it! woe! woe is me... i wish someone would
invent an ipod that does this tedious button-pushing chore
so that i don't have to...

wait, you mean that i'm not dreaming? there really is such
a device?! i feel like george jetson! the future is
noOoooooowwwwwwwwww!!!!!

finally, i can just relax. thank you, modern
science.

What a bloody disappointment. I am a diserning music
listener and want control on the fly. I guess they assume
the average listeners doesn't give a shit, or the research
says so. Such a pity. Now I'll just wait for their phone
with iTunes in it. Pfft!!

The Mac mini looks sweet, but once again ain't something for
me. All these new products seem to be aimed at a new market.
What about the old guard???????

exactly - this seems to be cheap shit to attract the average
windows user - ie those that just word and IE for example...
that new mini would be great for 100$ if it actually let you
choose yr tunes , i mean that just belies belief - are
yousupposed to switch it on and off till you get what you
want/ ? ??what a turd. i hope it flops.

similar capacity mp3 players are almost double the price of
the ipod, if it had a screen it would be more expensive,
then you would be moaning about the price.

Its good for its target audience, if you don't like it it
doesn't mean it isn't perfect for someone else. People who
exercise, who always use random play, who select a playlist
or album listen to before putting it on the ipod, who want
an ipod but can't afford it, this is perfect for them. My
sister bought it as she wants a cheap ipod for listening to
music (she doesn't have many songs) and transfering files to
college.

People have different listening tastes and wishing it to
flopp because it doesn't suite you is pretty selfish.

There is no chance it will flopp, £69 for an ipod, they'll
have trouble keeping up with demand (as usual).

The only use I can see for one of these is in situation
where you can't use the control's/don't want to be tempted
to. I might get a 512mb one, just to use on my motorbike-
the compact size means it won't be bulky in my pockets; it's
cheap, so if it gets wrecked when I get caught in a storm,
it's not the end of the world; I won't be tempted to try to
fiddle with the controls whilst riding; the limited
size/format of playback means I'll only put "killer" tracks
on there. I'm rapidly moving towards this on my xbox- only
putting on great tracks, rather than being a completist and
putting whole albums on.

I probably won't get one at release though- I'll wait till
it flops and they're going dirt cheap in stores trying
desperately to sell them :D

station and for $99 you can't really go wrong|!

On the subject of random play music, my girlfriend is
obsessed with it- she was really peeved that the hi
fi she got for xmas, in her own words, "I don't care if it's
ugly, or doesn't sound very good, I just want it to play CDs
and shuffle."

She is also looking for a USB HD stick. I reckon this might
be a good way of killing 2 birds with one stone for her
birthday...

Am I right in thinking Ipods can't play .wma? (MSoft
licencing issues)

"...and those signature white earbud headphones tell the

Shouldn't that be, "and those signature white earbud

okay hoping for to flop is a bit much , but i just think it
is daft they don't give you the option to choose tracks or
at least playlists - surely that costs basically nothing for
apple to add on ...

i'd buy one if they added that feature...

i agree, it could be a really simple add on, like a standart

I suppose not having the screen keeps the cost down a bit,
but as you say, you can get clocks/watches for less than $1,
so it shouldn't affect things too much.

I've been having a hard time fitting my 4G iPod™ into my
mouth. This new iPod™ Shuffle will be soooo much easier to
swallow. It'll be perfect for listening to music coming from
my stomach. It's not like I could see and choose the songs
while the old 4G iPod™ was traveling down my long
intestines anyway.

more like a curiosity i'd say.

(besides, the "shuffle" feature on iTunes seems a bit
flawed, sometimes i use it but it always seem to shuffle
through the same songs)

i think it looks ok, quite neat and small really. personally
i'm one for a screen and being able to select what i want to
listen, so i would never get one, but it's a good price for
a flash player with that much memory.

"anyway it's too expensive..."

for 1GB id definately isn't too expensive, most comparable
players are almost double the price.

anyway i've decided to sell my 4G 40GB ipod on ebay as I
simply don't need every single song with me and I tend to
use shuffle quite often, I only occasionally play an album
through its entirety in order. For what I need a music
player for I don't need a large 40GB player. Also after
buying a car i really need the money, I can't afford luxury
items like this.

So i'm selling the 4G and getting either the 512 one or 1GB,
i'll probably get the 1GB one as its the best value.

Ironic isn't it, when hardware Mp3 players came out, the
slow time to copy to them (I've had serial and parallel
cable ones!) and the time before getting somewhere where you
can recharge/reload it with songs, meant that capacity was
very important.

Now, when I'm seldom away from a PC for more than a few
hours (unless I'm asleep), or off hiking or on holiday. Plus
the fact nearly all modern PCs have Mp3 functionality and a
USB port, means there's no longer the need for large
capacity IMO.

The difference between the 1gb and the 512mb is academic-
I'm highly unlikely to be listening to more than a few hours
of music in one stretch, unless I'm in a lounge/bedroom, in
which case I'd have a PC/Hi-fi to listen to things on. I try
to avoid public transport and unless I'm flying, never use
it for more than 2 hours or so.

Also, I find I don't bother with playlists etc. on bigger
ones, unless I'm showing a friend a particular track, so
carrying my whole collection with me isn't that important
either. The only reason I can see for that is a purely
altruistic one- giving mates some of your tracks, when you
go over their house. You can do that via the internet,
though.

I'm not knocking bigger players, but for me, 512mb would be
all that's neccessary. I reckon I'll get one...

I agree with 512 being enough for music, however my player
also has recording (which I'll record my lectures with!) and
if the designers aren't retarded they are USB mass storage
devices as well, so 1 gig is good.

Yes, I agree that if you were going to use it as mass
storage too, 1gb would be worthwhile. Nice to carry all your
tech in one device (so long as it has decent battery life- I
had a mobile phone that had Mp3 and mass storage
functionality, but partly due to small capacity and fear of
draining my phones battery, seldom used either).

In case you're curious, this is what I grabbed. It is overpriced,
but it is a gift. It arrives monday and I'll post lots of

encoded as OGG Vorbis files, but without that I still would
have chosen this one.
