I am seriously considering hooking up with this evil little beast. Anyone have one?

They are said to have a better analog emulation than the Nords and Viruses, with lower aliasing, better oscs and killer filters. I'm checking one out in person tomorrow...

They have the same guts as the larger Ion. Check out a demo.

Yeah... I am considering getting this. I have a feeling it and my MicroKORG are all I really need.

Vocoder and D-Link, Vocoder and D-Link.

Vocoder and d-link? What's a d-link? I thought it was a network card.

Both the ion and the microkorg have vocoders if I'm not mistaken...

you should get it just because of the tribute paid to Rush in the beginning of the demo, that was like the sound from the song (Tom Sawyer) but like upgraded to present day standards. Nice ;)

Oh and the other sounds seemed pretty good too. It would be nice to get those big sounds from a little synth, but I don't think I'll ever part with my Yamaha EX-5.. I'm content with big sounds from a big synth. =p

The d-link, if I am not mistaken is the name given to those two little beams of light it uses to control modulation and effects... at least that is what 2 synth review sites, and the salesperson at long & macuade called it. It has a 40 band vocoder. My MicroKORG only has 16 bands... but it sounds tight....

Ah, I don't think the micron has that, does it? D-beam is a Roland thing. The Alesis photon has something similar but it's just a controller and audio interface.

d-beam and d-link are 2 different things actually, d-beam is what I was thinking of before. The d-Link is a tool for syncing sound to video, if I remember correctly.

So I picked it up. Was playing it last night and this morning - made me late for work.

It's fucking fantastic. The sound is so hunky and beefy I am completely gay over it. It roars and screams and bubbles and punches and kicks and whispers.

There's some slight aliasing on the very highest notes but that's not a big issue - you have to be playing up in the mosquito frequencies to hear it, and even then I don't think you'd notice it in a mix.

So far the only drawback I can find is that you can't adjust the pulsewidth of the square LFOs. Maybe they'll add that in a future OS update (I plan to bug them about it).

It's versatile and easy to program considering the few controls - there's shortcuts to get into the oscillator settings, filter settings, mod matrix etc. A neat feature is you can assign a different pitch bend range to each of the three oscillators in a patch, so some bend more than others when you turn the pitch wheel. The 3 knobs and 2 sliders are assignable, and if you have another box of midi knobs you can assign them to other parameters through the mod matrix. Lots and lots of different filter types including formants and combs.

I'm not even going to describe the pattern sequencer, arpeggiator, rhythms and setups that let you assign different parts to different ranges and play one-man Kraftwerk with both hands... you may think the idea is cheesy but it is not cheesy - it sounds great and inspiring. I was playing a 7/4 pattern synched to 4/4 sliced beats from FL and it was like instant inspiration.

Alesis is making some kickass and innovative products these days - I'm eager to see what they'll unleash at NAMM this year. A mini version of the Andromeda would be cool.
