okay... i searched for something like this for i don't know
how long, some neat vst, maybe emulated hardware synth that
makes really crunchy, fat basses...

like for example in sp's fat controller...

pump pump pump pump it up!

that song is great. :D

i'm getting so tired of using software for music production.
i need to get a good midi setup so i can finally use my
microkorg to full capacity. currently i'm sampling the
sounds and sequencing them.

what kind of vst's do you currently use? i'm looking to
start using a few more.

v-station is the best one... about 20 megs - fully
controlable, analog sounds... just great.

it's my absolute top favourite synth !!

v-station is ok.

I like micromoog and minimoog... they got a phat ass sound.

Somejerk; if you get a midi to usb addapter, you can use
your korg with a standard usb port. It also lets you edit
the synthesis matrix on your computer instead of trying to
float around 5 knobs! It should only cost 50$ us for one of
these contraptoins (altho I am not sure about latency and
all that jazz)!

i actually bought one of those, but i had problems getting
rid of the delay between the computer and the keyboard.
someone told me that i need to adjust the midi time clock,
but i wasn't able to get it to work. thanks for the
suggestion though! i think i'm going to save up and buy a
decent midi-mixer type of thing that has regular/analog
inputs, for my bass amp, keyboard, etc. i like to play in
'real-time', and having to make music with a mouse is
debilatating.

i need to setup anonymous ftp on my webspace so we can start
some sort of a VST exchange thing. i think that would help a
lot of people.

Soulseek isn't good enough?
Just share your vst's in a directory only accesible to
people on your list.

I am going to make a soulseek directory to that effect.

i just did a track which has quite a fat bass sound in it.
you can get the vsti here

you can also create fat sounds with the use of compressing,
stereo detuning, making a very short delay on one channel,
phase inversion, eq etc...

Well, if you invert one of the sterio channels, and then
offset it slightly (like, one or two millaseconds) it will
make the sound appear much louder, or fuller, without making
the audio clip. Use this trick for the force of good, and
not evil. Best for bass or drum tracks.

Also, check out some of arturia's classic analogue synth
vst's. The ones I have played with; cs80v, minimoog, moog
modular are totaly classy. They sound good, they look
decent, and they are relatively easy to use. And the bass is
rich. They Arp2600 is comming out, and I am looking forward
to getting my hands on it.

Damn... there are way too many vst synths out there...

I just got into the whole "software collect and archive"
mindset the other day, and am getting intimidated again.
This is why I cut my internet connection last time... never
working on anything... downloading way too much stuff...
research research...

The WASP synth in FruityLoops is capable of churning out
some pretty fat sounds I think. That's my favorite synth on
there anyway.

I hate to admit it, but I pretty much only use software at
the moment.

If you go to Vintage Synth Explorer, you will come across a fine
array of "fat" synths I'm sure. Very reliable site I think,
for audio samples, reviews, and lists of artists that use a
particular synth are provided.

He's right-

The classic is 2 oscillators, one an octave lower than the
other. I like layering two synths with the same patch, then
slightly detune/out of phase one synth.

So, you have 2 slightly different ones at 2 different
octaves.

EQing and compression are important too. Don't fall into
cutting the cutting the high freqs out entirely, it can make
the bass sound a bit muted and lifeless. As well as sititng
"murkily" in a mix.

Squares and Sawtooth are classic bass wave shapes.

Why not Create harmonics to fill your sound out,

If you play a chord and hit all the keys at an equal
velocity it sounds like a chord. To create a harmonic lower
the volume as you increase the frequency (you can see this
in the image i posted above.)

It begins to sound less like several notes/tones and more
like a single dense texture.

Ceri knows his stuff: dont be tempted to roll off the top
frequencies and overboost the bottom end, this is a mistake
i always used to make, the track ends up drowning in low
frequency. To boost the overall track volume try a master
limiter on your stereo output.

There are some excellent free plugins here

basstation is certainly cheaper than v-station and it is
extremly phat!!!
endless hours of fun & heavy bass yesterday with it and my
ms-20, until the comp crashed... :((((((

albino is also extremly good sounding and phat.

but the best plug-in is still the vintage warmer by psp
audioware, with it you can phatten-up any sounds you want,
got a cheap and unpowerful sound? put it thru the warmer and
gently(or agressively) compress and overdrive it, plus eq
and voila! instant powerful drums, phat bass, piercing
hi-hats or warm voice, you name it and it does it with
amazing quality/presence.

Yes, Vintage Warmer gets my vote as "best software
compressor, ever".

Novation KS4 is an incredible hardware synth for the
price.... microkorg pah!!!.... shite them is (used to own
one), considering you can get a KS4 for around the same
price as a micro second hand. The KS4 will kick synths in a
much higher price bracket.... I'm not sure if they sell them
new anymore but i bought mine for about 250 pounds around a
year ago & its a beast.
