Yeah yeah, jeroen mentioned this, but remember jeroen you
mentioned it because I brought it up, pigfucker!

Like Lee said, a possible drawback is the client-side
computation.. but as far as I know the javascript already
used is at the same level.. however it can be ignored. I
guess maybe a phone will be able to do it soon, if not
already. My aim Lee was to make it a drop-in replacement
for the current one and not try to change things at all (as
I would expect that request to fail).

mrgypsum, it's not 'hard-coded'; like lee said the
difference is that the computation is on the client and not
on the server, so the transmission cost is saved..

I think that *everyone* should notice the index being
faster.

also the same code could be used for the topic view, where
it may be nice for things like the 'now playing' thread with
1239821 hojillion messages.

yeah, the actual processor power needed to generate the list
is very small. a simple loop counting up to 10,000 or
whatever would probably only take a millisecond.

however, the time it takes to transfer 100k over dialup is
probably noticable.

Oh I forgot to mention.. yeah like you said js files can be
included, so you can have just one shared js file among many
pages and the browser caches them. I doubt that'll happen
though, there are a few JS shits littered at the beginning
of the pages, but not enough to motivate moving it into a
file (I mean I would do it, I'm saying they wouldn't
listen). The only reason I posted this was due to the 5x
change. I talk too much.

and the permban will be final.

Just parse the server on a two way interchange. Right now,
it's four way prototype forces the bits to travel through
the web before they even enter the internet, in each
direction, which uses at least 12 proxy servers but more
often than not, 16. Reducing it to a two prong proxy will
minimize this and latch the server onto a temporary
firewall. It can then sit there, allowing you to multitask a
new route for it and jam it. All you have to do really is
burn it to a mdf file, then convert it to .hfc. After it's
parced it will be much more efficient because 4 cubed is
sixteen whereas 2 cubed is only 4. It's really quite
embarrassing that nobody noticed this before. Fucking
computers.

I'm setting that as my wallpaper. I have strange screen
proportions (imagine a penis), so I'll fill in the extra
space with something related (imagine a penis)

nothing wrong with hard coding, to me it looks a little like
it, but i am not too familar with the php so my mistake

I added some JS code based on sneakattack's idea. Everybody
invited to test. My page size went down to 50kb on the index
page, and to approx 100kb on topic pages. Dunno the previous
values though, I have DSL here ;)

suggestion:

I don't know how to do javascript, but if possible, I would
adapt the code to PHP... compliancy won't be an issue since
it's server-side, and since both languages are more or less
C-ish (I think), adaptation shouldn't be that hard. JS is
kind of a no-no nowadays...

I'm glad it worked out ok! I have topic view set to just
20, so the difference is huge for me--30k instead of 150k.

1) Reducing server load and bandwidth usage was the point,
and is a good thing
2) JavaScript is a no-no? Look at gmail. Besides the very
basic javascript this uses has been supported by every
browser for years. Furthermore the site requires you to
have javascript--you can't log in with it turned off!

when I say 'the site', I mean xlt--the login function checks
if you have javascript, and has ever since I got here.

hmm.. well, all I know is that JS is no loonger recommended,
but there are many more important upgrades to be done
first... like using divs for design instead of tables...

Recommended by whom? Pick your sword by the battle. This
bit of javascript has vastly reduced page loads, and is
supported by everyone for whom the site was already
supported. Hence there are no cons, and some pros.

And by the way, you say c-ish; all three languages use infix
notation for algebraic evaluations, but that is an almost
universal commonality between languages. resemblance stops
there.

while it's not perfect, javascript is dang near universal on
teh webby.

well.. they're both more or less english... however, I don't
know much JS. I mostly use PHP when I need dynamic content.

JS is not recommended by just about every recently educated
webdesigner I've talked to. If you use PHP correctly, the
server-load will be reduced even more, I think.

but the main priority for tune and phob should be to change
the table-design into div.

I think there are also probably some when you're saving

something partial..
