i haven't heard enough of the Swans to give a good recommendation... but i can speak for Angels of the Light, which is one of Michael Gira's many cool Post-Swans bands... they put out an album last year called Everything is Good Here, Please Come Home <--it's pretty sweet... btw, have you heard jarboe's 'anhedoniac' yet? that's some awesome music, probably even much darker then swans stuff, if that's possible at all :)

i love the swans, they're one of my favorite bands.
i don't know if soundtracks for the blind is their best... check out The Great Annhilator. that is my favorite swans album. in fact, it's one of my favorite records ever.

also, buy Forever Burned. those two cds are perfect.

and i really recommend buying them from Young God Records, because michael gira personally autographs each copy. it's fantastic.

Swans are my favourite band, I would say that Soundtracks For The Blind is their best album. I think their second best is White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity, that's out of print but most of it is included on the Various Failures compilation. I recommend that release.

The soft, eerie tracks are good, too. They maket the scary parts even scarier.

children of god is sort of scary, but it's nowhere near as visceral and apocalyptic as Filth, imo.

READ: the Swans were not at any point death metal. not even close.

in the beginning, they were very cacophonous and heavy, an extreme to music. their early music was churning and bludgeoning and loud.

children of god lp isn't even close to how intense they were before that album.

all that said, they were never considered "metal", so i don't even know where you would get death metal from. they had more to do with industrial music... really in their own category.

well, as long as it seems death metal bands just roar, scream and try to be scary - and remain pathetic and funny - ol' skool swans and "come to daddy" remain MY definition of death metal. IMO, aphex can be scarier than all death metal
