Adbusters encourages consumerism
[seen on metafilter]
I recall a while back being revolted when a member posted that he was getting a subscription to Adbusters for Christmas along with his other goodies...
Worth keeping in mind that the author is flogging a book! Everyone want to sell me something. :D

One thing I thought of that the author didn't articulate is that it's like an evolutionary arms race - the consumer develops immunity to one form of marketing so the corporations adjust their memes to compensate and reinfect the consumer. And it's this endless cycle that, as the author sees it, drives consumption.
For example, indie music HAS to be due for a backlash in 2005. If Pitchfork doesn't start dissing indie next year then I don't know my snobs. And everyone will sell their GYBE, Pavement and Ted Leo CDs and buy, I dunno, something else.

It is kind of funny how music can be sold to people. Almost all music out there is objectively good, I think, its just the culture behind the music that sells it.

People aren't buying the indie music. They're buying or reinforcing identities for themselves - sassy, clever, thrift-shop clothes wearing identities, too smart to fall for marketing ploys. *ahem*
Next year we can sell them anti-indie identities when they desire to consume something else.

there was a good program on this on bbc1 last week, about children and consumerism. they showed some who *had* to have the lastest brand even though their parents didn't agree, and then they showed some children who were clearly more intelligent and rejected the whole label thing, but sadly didn't realise that their "taste in rejection" was being marketed just as successfully.
btw, i was a bit disappointed this thread wasn't about billy idol selling his motorbike on ebay, but i'll get over it in time.

good read. having read no logo myself, i'd have to defend the book to some extent. the details it went into about sweat shops are more important than any anti-consumerism culture it may have produced.
The Rebel Sell will appear in book-length this September from HarperCollins. Click here to order a copy. :D

I don't understand why "american beauty" is being used as an example - to me that film has never been about "anti-consumerism" but about the falseness of the so-called American Dream. yes, a certain form of consumerism does fall under the idea of the American Dream, but it's only a symptome, not a main point.
so I certainly agree with the statement: "What american beauty illustrates, with extraordinary clarity, is that rebelling against mass society is not the same thing as rebelling against consumer society.", but I don't think the film has ever proposed to do anything else.
and what's up with the bicycly line-breaks?

Like Fight Club it's about replacing the purchase of consumer goods with the purchase of a prefabricated identity.

I don't see what is so surprising about this. to me the film is about finding your own identity, so in a way it's about what you buy, not so much about that you buy.
I might add at this moment that I think that "american beauty" is pretty crass and not very interesting in how it handles its subject anyway.
I will now change back to my monolith-avatar to complement yours.

My view of American Beauty has softened a little. I realize that the Kevin Spacey character manages to transcend his silly midlife crisis which redeems the film somewhat. I still think it's shallow bullshit with 2-dimensional characters though.
Speaking of films, I wonder if it would be possible to make a movie like Blade Runner today... audiences wouldn't understand the concept of self being defined by memories - the personalities of the replicants would have to be stabilized by their t-shirts and shopping habits instead.

the concept of memories defining a person would be turned into a tawdry thriller with Ashton Kutcher.
I would say "minority report" kind of has a go at it, but not in a very effective way - focusing on the Tom Cruise character instead of the psychic types (Agatha, I believe), who are much more interesting.

Well Minority Report is more about free will than identity - in any case it made me nauseous. Spielberg is clearly lifting the eyeball motif from Blase Runner but he doesn't do anything with it conceptually. It's just "eyeballs - look, yucky!" What a fucking overbudgeted train wreck of a movie.
