Ideal sound system setup

I've been toying with the idea of a dedicated music room
recently. One with sound proof walls and a stereo system
that surronds a comfortable chair in the middle with
subwoofers inside it. I'm just wondering what the most ideal
setup would be. Has anyone done anything like this? Should I
just stick to earphones?

I'm planning to do this when i'm in the middle of my forties
and the hairline recedes and waistline expands...

hmm.. you have to realise that to do this properly, you need
lots of money and lots of time, but since you're planning on
having a dedicated room for it, I guess you've got all of
that...

first of all: do NOT use a square room.. rectangular is
better and uneven is preferred. preferrably, the ceiling
should also be sloping or at least not even... buy
hifi-carpets, and maybe some resonance reducing materials to
coat the walls with...

also, the subwoofer in the chair isn't necessary..
subwoofers should be in the corner of the room, not in the
center... even if you're a basshead, this will work fine,
you just set it a bit higher.

you'd also need a set of speakers that are proportional to
the size of the room...

should I go on...?

Yes. I want to know what the perfect setup would be. Let's
pretend that money and time are not an issue. Would a room
that's shaped like an igloo be ideal?

no, irregularity is the ideal...

if you go to a proper concerthall, you'll notice that the
walls most likely are made out of plates that slope in all
directions, and the ceiling won't be flat.

also, then for speakers, I'd go for Martin/Logan
electrostatic speakers (you'd best get the sub from the same
people as the speakers, so their sub-tower, then)...

Amplifier... some tube-amplified thing... there are many
good, and I've honestly never listened to one, since they're
mostly too expensive for the shops to have in store...
either that, or two of Classés monoblocks...

sources: for vinyl.. definately the Clearaudio Master Reference. CD...
maybe Hegel, but there are many good manufacturers
out there... maybe the aforementioned Classé, to make the
system match?

Should the type of music be taken into consideration? Is
there a setup that equally effective for say Autechre and
Stockhausen?

most likely, yes... but that's something I've never
considered, since I don't have enough money for even one of
the components to that system...

if I had enough money (we're talking millions), I'd probably
be buying stuff that I haven't even heard of yet... there
are so many good companies I haven't heard of yet, and it's
ONLY because they don't make consumer products.. they make
exclusive systems that only filthy rich people can afford..
so there are definately better systems out there, but this
is the best I can think up... after you've listened to
electrostatic speakers, you'll go home and curse at your own
speakers for not being as accurate!

b&w nautilus is also close to heaven when it comes to
speakers...

Having your own sound room would be soo ace... Just sit in
your state of the art lounge chair, turn the lights down and
zone out.

definately!

what would also rock, would be to have a separate surround
system with a projector (on the other side of the room or
something... preferrably in its own room too, but then you
couldn't just turn your chair around to watch movies...)!
