The original Unreal-amazing.

I know this will probably sound ridiculous to most of you,
but my favorite fps is still the original Unreal.

Sure, it has weak weapons, dragged out areas towards the
end, a pretty weak story, and none of the glorious set
pieces and scripted events Half-Life had...but there was
still something awe-inspiring about it.

I played Unreal again today-and it still looks brilliant.
The music, areas, and general "feel" of the game is what
does it for me; from the increadable open expanses at the
beginning (with some of my favorite music ever) to the
dingy, spooky ancient temples later on, it really makes you
feel that you're in an alien world more then any game since,
imho (yes, that includes Metroid Prime.) Perhaps because the
areas leave a lot open to interpretation (along with the
story) it allows you to use your imagination more regarding
the various weird things you come across, to fill in the
gaps...

Sure, there's nothing very innotive in the gameplay
mechanics to mention. However, I can't deny that I enjoy
playing Unreal more than a lot of supposedly better
shooters, and what's more annoying is I can't explain why
either.

Maybe I just have a fettish for alien temples and nice
atmospheric techno music.

the ideology of fps is stupid to me. run+shoot+pick unreal
weapons ( big bazookas, lasers, shotguns, eh )+fast fingers.
nothing more.
i expect something more form the game than just quick
fingers, and unfortunately, when it comes to fps, quick
fingers are the only thing that matters.

i wasnt generalizing. i just share dmy opinion, i think i
played in enough number of fps to say what i think about
them.

Unreal Tournament is still one of the best multiplayer
games. and I mostly really dislike deathmatch games.

FPS have become the media through which I prove my manliness
to myself...so I usually spend 3/4 of my life fragging on
CS

Anyway fps are the only game which I happen to be able to
play lately...I don't have the patience for anything else...

agreed, original unreal was awesome.

you can play it in the unreal tournament engine, as it was
an evolved engine from the original unreal. heh, actually,
the ut2k3/ut2k4 engine is actually evolved from it, too -
wonder if you can use those engines/textures to play
original unreal?

wow, i love this game too.

can someone remind me how the game begins? all i can
remember are vast, lush spaces with waterfalls to begin
with, and a section where all the
lights...slowly...turn...off and then this big alien motha
fucka appears.

well, actually from memory you only get to the vast spaces
after you get out into the open from some kind of massive
indoor place.

i must be insane

You start off on a prison ship that's crashed and make your
way out into the open, which is the place you were
remembering. The bit with the lights turning off and the
Skaarj is in the mines after that, IIRC.

Unreal is still one of my favourite games ever. I'm not sure
what exactly it is about it that's so impressive, but it
still works.
