I've had a lot of trouble with this question. To me, my opinion is definately that the super intricate detailed stuff like autechre "lp5" otto von schirach "8000 bc" crunch "1" etc. is soooo far ahead of everything else in terms of what sounds good to me. I think it's that the brain can only process so much information at one time and these works provide information overload, hypnotically sort of. I think there are casual listeners that don't want to spend much time on a single work, like lp5. But with complex material, the brain understands it much better with repeated listens and it gets much better. I also like stuff that is striking in some way, like imaginary fantasy is quite simple but the use of melody is so ahead in originality.
As for the definition of music, I like "organized sound" because nothing can really challenge it. Music simply is organized sound. People can define stuff anyway they want though, it's only when people together agree on a single logical definition that they can communicate about the same thing.

I don't know what makes some music better than others, or what music IS. But I know it's the most important thing in the world to me, by far.

yeah, good come back. Doh! does it have to be organized by a person to be music, or just simply organized. I think the former would be better because otherwise everything would be music, which would make it exactly the same as the word "sound". But you can't limit it to the human species either. Aliens, dogs, kangaroos are capable of organizing sound too.

yeah, personally i'm fond of the former, it's the sorta shit i hear outside when i'm smokin' a joint- y'know night noises- that inspires me before i get back in and get back on the gear

Good Music: a universal sound that trancends race culture or language, and is appealing to most everyones sences (gos beyond just sound but also has feeling and mood).

good music is something that should create emotion, inspiration and thought in the mind of the listener: this goes in hand with the fact that the best music is usually made by someone using genuine emotion, thought and inspiration to create the music in the first place.
music at its best is the implicit aural representation of the creators thoughts

granted, but no matter what you do, or how you do it or how you "transcend" there's gonna be someone out there who doesn't like it.
5 billion plus people livin' on this planet, statistics make this obvious.
still you have a point.

good music is a relative term... for instance, if person A writes a song with emotion, and lays his heart on the page or computer screen, but person B doesn't feel it, does that make a bad song? No, it just means that person A and person B are on different wave lengths or whatever... so, what an individual considers good music is what that person likes listening to...

and what makes something sound good to a particular person and not to another. After all we all have slightly altered copies of the same biological bodies and ears and brains. It's probably past experiences.

all good all good. but that doesn't really explain anything
GODDAMMIT i have a definition for money, love, anything else you want
but art is ever elusive, but i suppose that's what makes it interesting

"what an individual considers good music is what that person likes listening to"
the point of that statement is that really, there is no definition of what is good music... but each person has their own definition or interpretation of good music...

IMO, quality is subjective... but as long as its subjective, good music should sort of challeng ur brain a little bit.. this is why music always sounds the best the first few times u hear it.. and why u can eventually get bored of it and move on to more challenging material..
i think thats also why people's musical preferences (at least most people) tend to continue to develop towards more and more advanced/complicated music so ur brain always has a fresh challenge

ok...this doesnt really have anything to do with whether its good or bad...
but heres how the dictionary defines music... "1: the scinece or art of combining tones into a composition having structure and continuity; also: vocal or instrumental sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony 2: an agreeable sound"
dont worry everyone...im going to bed soon...

erm, thinking about it good music is probably any music that fulfils the purpose it was intended for: to challenge, educate, motivate, please, scare or whatever. that fulfillment can only be judged on an individual basis
sorry, i couldn't sleep, so that popped into my head: wotcha think?
