Build your own instruments?

This is something I have always wanted to do. I tried doing
it a few years back - i built something out of a 2x4, proxy
glue, iron elbows, plastic elbows and rulers all of
different sizes - i called it a quadbar. it was nice, but
fell apart eventually. I've wanted to do this again
recently, since a friend of mine wishes to start a group,
and desires to write "ancient" music, i'm talking B.C.
Greek/ beginning of music/ Pythagoras stuff.

share your experiences on this, if you have any.

your friend wishes to write ancient music? What exactly are
you going to use as a guideline?
I've got no experience on making instruments, but it is very
interesting, I would go into it myself but I'm a shit
craftsman. Some nice instruments were built by Harry Partch
though, There was a website with descriptions and samples of
some but I think it disappeared. If I was to do it though
I'd go into the microtonal stuff.

i'm getting an speak n spell in the mail very soon, and i'm
eager to circuit-bend the hell out of it. i'm thinking about
something that affects the pitch of it and that locks the
sounds and loops them.
the problem is that i don't know how to do it, even though i
have some soldering experience.
i have only rewired my 606 and 707 to make them work, so if
someone has any 'circuit-bending for dummies' stuff, or a
nice step by step thingie i'd be in their debt.

i built a guitar out of spare parts, and circuit-bent a
couple of toys. i haven't created an instrument from
scratch, but i would definitely like to.

oh, i thought that the Analord is a robotic ruler of the
underworld who constructed the analest analogue synths ever
invented in this universe specifically so that richard would
use them for the greatest analogue music ever, dedicated to
the Analord, in an expansive multi-ep set to be contained in
a classy binder. now i know i either read that fact
somewhere on the official site for sure, or i definitely
made it up just now.

A few weeks ago, there was a guy on CBC radio that made
instruments out of food. He had a big carrot, and made into
a flute right there in the studio. Actually, it sounded a
bit like a clarinet when he played it.

It doesn't get much better than a carrot flute.

I wrapped some elastic bands around an oddly-shaped box
once.

"Twang" went the bands. "Twang, Twang".

instructions?

i hacked a furby before.

it was fantastic. it would speak in tongues varying all the
time, based on my body resistance and hiow hard i was
squeezing a few wires. if you touched this other bit it
would glitch. it died after about an hour, never to
recover.

a furby minus the fur is pretty fucking creepy when it's
blinking epileptically and speaking in what is ancient
furby-aramiac, for all intents and purposes. pretty fucking
creepy.

hack furby

i have stuck a plastic ruler in a gap between two tables,
then it sounded like "poing" or something.
and a percussion set from household things..

funny you should mention that. i was playing with a thick
ruler for carpentry the other day, and was moving it up and
down the table, changing the open length as i plucked it.
interesting - it might work if you had a proper mic to amp
it.

I don't know if they are still around, but paia was a
company tat sold build it yourself theramins, synths etc.
More assembly than building it from scratch I guess, but it
might be a good way to get experience to build one from
scratch later on.
