I just bought this album before the weekend and it's been spinning ever since. It's awesome! Highly recommendable if you like electronica and want an introduction to avant garde jazz. It's amazing that it was recorded in 1964 and released on Blue Note. Check it out, maaan!

Track 3 on this album - Gazzelloni - is soooo wickedly great!Amazing stuff. Very IDM'ish indeed.

apperantly the 1st real star of delta country blues...this is probably the oldest blues record i've heard and it's brilliant. so far i only knew people like lee hooker, muddy waters, lowell fulson, chuck berry, buddy guy, little milton,...so newer blues basically.
Out to lunch! is 5 tracks only?

Are we listening to the same record? I hear no traces of IDM, I only hear a distinct influence on Zappa.

It might be a bit far-fetched to compare it to idm but I think it might appeal to (some of) the same audience.. and yes I totally get your Zappa comparison.

Eric Dolphy is definitely one of my all time favourite musicians... this album is pretty damn amazing...
if you dig this part of the Blue Note catalogue, you might also want to check Andrew Hill'sPoint of Departure and Bobby Hutcherson's Dialogue the three albums share a lot of the same players, and a similar vibe i think... and Point of Departure is definitely another fine display on Dolphy's part... gorgeous gorgeous stuff...

I love Point of departure! It's so.....different... I really had to listen to it a lot to get into it, though. But Dolphy's Out to lunch clicked with me instantly. I've become a huge fan of Anthony Williams, who plays drums on both these albums
Hutcherson's Dialogue and Wayne Shorter's Speak no evil are among the next records I'm gonna buy and they are recorded around the same time and part of the same era of Blue Note progressive greatness. So is Herbie hancock's Maiden Voyage, which I just bought and which is AWESOME!

yeah Maiden Voyage really is insanely gorgeous isn't it? the song Maiden Voyage is probably my favourite Hancock song... another album that i like from that era quite a bit is Inventions and Dimensions by Herbie... it features him with a polyrhythmic latin rhythm section... it's very droney styled stuff (in so far as they lock into these grooves and just explore every possibility of them and then transcend it... like a raga or something...)... so cool, it almost sounds IDMy in certain regards... might want to check that one out too if it sounds interesting to you ...

Well, Inventions and Dimensions is one of my all time favorite jazz albums... I need to get a new copy on cd though, 'cause I only have this on second hand vinyl, titled "Succotash". Took me quite a while to figure out that it actually was the same album...
Another old vinyl I have that I plan to reinvest in on cd is Kenny Burell's "Midnight Blue"
Bought a phat'n'funk cd today, btw: Jimmy Smith Live!: Root Down.

actually...
i can see it's really good, but i have difficulty with it. i'm sorta trying to force myself but most of the time i get bored before the end of the album.
like with most jazz or classical i've heard in fact. : |

Well, I got into jazz by listening to it a lot to get used to that kind of musical expression...

most of the time i feel like it (not especially this album but classical, jazz in general)'s lacking dynamic or something like that... like it was too "shy" (or codified for certain types, certainly not for Out To Lunch though) to really go into the direction it wants to...

Hmmm...I see your point... but I'm not sure that I agree with you..
Obviously, there are a lot of boring jazz out there but if you listen to how Charlie Parker, John Coltrane or Thelonious Monk sometimes goes off the handle with their instruments you wouldn't need to ask for more dynamics.
What really lighted my fire for jazz was the bebop of the forties. The clever lo-fi recordings of a bunch of musicians in a room going wham-bam-ba-dam-dam-pshhhh, with acoustic instruments is really, really fascinating! The very limited recording equipment they had and the thrilling sense of performance at every take keeps me glued to the speakers again and again. Listen to the recordings Monk did for Blue Note or the recordings Charlie Parker did in the forties and you'll see what I mean...

So like these two albums are really great and I now have to thank you for recommending them, yay.
Also, should I get Contours by Sam Rivers or something? It should be great considering the lineup, but

You should get Contrasts by Sam Rivers, I have to get more of his music myself, you can't go wrong with him really.

I recently got Rivers' "Fuschia Swing Song" and it made me hungry for more. "Contours" has an amazing lineup indeed, and is part of the Blue Note Connoisseur Series - and the sound quality of that series is simply stunning!
