What kind of synthesizer should I buy?

Xanatos from NYC on 2002-02-01 03:52 [#00077306]

My old Korg is broken, I want to get a new synth. Sam Ash
is having a huge sale tommorow, so I'm going to check this
thread again at school and drop by there afterwards, I can
probably spend up to $500. Suggestions?

I would go for a soft synth. Get Absynth if youre on a MAc,
FM7 if youre on PC. Nordmodular is supposed to rock too, I
dont know how much it costs though.

Tehe $500 will get you a nice casio or one of those
"all-in-one" dj crap shoots. Who am I kidding, I got a
Fizmo, Juno & Mirage for $300 a piece.

It all depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you
want a workstation, you need more $$. If you want to be
able to easily modify your gear, your gonna want analog, and
you'll need more $$. Theres the K Station, but it's ~$700.
You can get the good ol' XP-10, but you better like reading
manuals. Most of the stuff your going to be able to grab
(besides quality used gear) is going to be entry level. But
again, it all depends on what you want to do with it
[rewiring a cheap casio or yamaha can be fun if you grasp
the physics behind it].

BTW the Nord Modular is ~$2500

nord micro modular is only 500. and im told its a well
respected little box.

Yeah, get the micro modular from Clavia. I've been using one
for 2 years now and now it's the last synth I'd sell,
including my Kurzweil and old Rolands. If you don't know
modular synthesis, then the learning curve might be a bit
steep, but the reward is great, when you get there.

do not purchase a korg ms2000, i found mine to be a bit shit

MikeP is a huge fan of the nord modular. Autechre use it
lots too, appearantly.

My suggestion would be to go for the hardware and not
software. If you have the money, that is.

Can I hear more about the difference between and
advantages/disadvantages of analog vs. non-analog (digital?)
synths?

Id buy a DX7...err, I never owned a real synth in my life,
so dont listen to me....

of course, a $2000 synth is useless if you don't know how to
make good music on a $200 synth.

"a $2000 synth is useless if you don't know how to make good

how do you learn how to use a 2000 synth?

I happen to have and USE my Korg MS2000 and I think it works
fine. It makes some pretty great sounds, and its not that
expensive. I am going to be hooking it up as a midi keyboard
trough reason, I record some weird songs I make on it. Its a
fun machine

^ thanks I'll check that one out.

i would say instead of buying a costly synth get a
piece-of-shit keyboard, even a kiddies one and buy some
second hand guitar effects pedal: even if they are battered
and not much good for playing guitar, but you can hook lots
of them up and use the extreme settings to turn your naff
sounds into something cool. good for live sets aswell, or
you can mangle your voice and record it so that you have a
cheap, highly controlable synth that you can alter ad
infinitum...

someone said dx7 as a joke but fm synths can still make some
really mad sounds, especially when through guitar pedals

people let me know if they have any luck with this
technique

the ms2000 is okay, but a little flat, it isn't very phatt
or fizzly, for that money you could get a virus rack one
which is really cool or the little korg electribe a which
uses similar technology but is half the price: the are both
cheaper and that means you could buy one of those and
something else on top

i am speaking from knowledge of the uk market, but i assume
the prices are relative
