i just got an email from a friend of a friend -- i'll call her K. K's mom received a tip from her son's (K's brother) highschool teacher suggesting he might be using drugs. K's mom searched through his room and found a lot of suspicious things and showed them to K. K knows i've used a lot of drugs and is asking if i can deduce any conclusions. it seems pretty obvious to me he's using stimulants, probably cocaine.
i feel it is extremely unethical to look through a teenager's stuff and i'm not sure a hysterical parent is what this kid needs right now.
what do i say, if anything?
i'll cut and paste the email in this thread momentarily.

the email:
I have sort of a strange request for you and your drug-related expertise.
One of my brother's teachers made a very vague sort of warning phone call to my mom, concerning my brother and his new friends and their activities. She took the hint and looked around his room and discovered some interesting things.
We've made some of our own conclusions already, but wanted to see if you could add anything to the picture.
Considering the following things, which of them could be related to drug use, and how (ie, if he's just smoking weed, we can deal, but if there's something more going on, we'd like to know)?
Behavioral/physical issues (not necessarily all occurring simultaneously, of course):
1. decreased (often significantly) appetite 2. dilated pupils 3. angry outbursts 4. extra-chattiness
Things found all hidden in one place: 5. lighter (ok, well, that was a given, but I listed it anyway)
6. tweezers 7. zig zag papers 8. nail clippers 9. a very small compact (mirror size about 1x2 cm) 10. multiple empty baggies 11. film canister containing half a joint and some seed-like items
12. two empty packs of Colts cigars 13. two sticks of Chapstick (still containing chapstick) 14. a bottlecap with the flat part cut out and replaced by the screen from a faucet
15. grey oil pastel 16. two eyebrow pencils (and a makeup sharpener) 17. grey oil pastel 18. a funnel (probably holds about 1/2 cup of whatever), with some remains of crystals left in it - smells like kool-aid, but was hidden with the rest of the suspiciousness
Other items of note: 19. a whole crapload of broken ballpoint pens, broken about an inch in, with the long parts lying about unsuspiciously on the desk, but with the short ends missing
Thanks for any help you can provide ;)

the searching is already done - not much you can do about that.
if you do not give them the info someone else will.

at the very least i think you should tell them how you feel about the fact that they went through his stuff, and make it clear that they have to approach the issue with more sensitivity than that in the future... that said, if he's in high school, it probably is a good idea to get him some help... i wouldn't count on every high school kid dabbling with (what sounds to me like) meth to make it to the other side okay all by themselves...
if they are patient with him, he should be okay...

Yeah... looks like meth and pot (although pot really aint no thang).
Specially with the chattiness, anger, reduced appetite and pupil dilation.
Honestly, meth destroys people more than most other drugs. Its highly addictive, and fucks your brain up longterm, prolly ten times than cocain, heroin and crack. Suggest they send them to treatment before it becomes too big a problem. Don't narc on them and tell them what drug they use or anything like that, but I have to deal with jib-kids all day, and they aint any fun.
