i don't know about Calgary... but i would assume that it is
as busy gig-wise as edmonton has been the last while... all
of a sudden we have had a tonne of acts of reasonable
interest coming through including:

Tiga
Solvent/L'Usine
Chromeo
Jaga Jazzist
Manitoba
Xiu Xiu
ICP (not the rappers)

thanks mostly to a couple of local DJs we've had a pretty
steady lineup of electro type acts:

next week Secret Mommy is coming.. after that i can't think
of anyone off the top of my head, but there's sure to be
others

as far as record stores... in Edmonton there is Blackbyrd
Myoosik on whyte ave which is decent, and then there is my
home away from home: Listen Records

in calgary the best is probably Melodiya, but there are a
few way cool vintage stores in Calgary if you are looking
for something other than new electronica (and those two
stores would be Recordland and Hot Wax)

also both cities have a Megatunes, which has sort of become
the vaguely commercialized indie stores in the province... i
do not like to give them patronage, but my fucking relatives
keep giving me fifty dollar gift certificates...

my suggestion to you would be to keep an eye out for
concerts in the local indie papers... in Edmonton there is
Vue and See, and in Calgary there is FFWD and ... something
else, can't remember right now... but in either case
(Edmonton or Calgary) both zines are available all over the
place...

so where are you at exactly? are you in one of the cities or
are you somewhere in between?

PS: if you are looking for good old european beer, just be
vigilant and find a good liquour store... most have a half
decent selection.... just picked myself up a case of
Steinwick's yesterday...

well it's too late now... but yes... they were quite nice...
we usually get a few ninja tunes acts each year... always
with the jazz fest, sometimes otherwise...

well... you are in Lloydminster man... electronic music
isn't exactly "rural" music here in north america i don't
know if its any different in europe... but yeah, if that's
important to you and you are planning on staying in Canada
for a while, i would strongly suggest finding yourself a
nice major city... neither Edmonton or Calgary are
impeccable, but there IS a growing interest...
