I've had a Tascam tape 4-track for years amd I'm now
going to put together a system using my computer (2002 Dell
with XP). Problem is I have NO CLUE as to what recording
software is best for me to get. I would like to really add
effects, cut and paste, reverse and manipulate the shit out
of what I record. Help me out!

If you're looking for messing around with raw-from-tape (or
minidisc, DAT etc) wav files, then i'd recommend something
like wavelab, goldwave or cooledit. They're all pretty
solid.

I don't know, the one that came with the computer I guess.
I went to a couple of music shops today and saw some
interfaces with a UBS line which they said completely
bypasses the sound card altogether.

I suggest 'Adobe Audition'. It is what happened to cooledit
after adobe bought out syntrilium.

Its easy to use, it sounds amazing, it has a fully
automatable mixer with vst and dx support for effects. It
does everything you may or may not need.

Cubase is good too, but its not as accessible as Audition
is.

Thanks. How much does it run for? What type of soundcard
do I need (if any)?

Ummmm. I am not sure as to the price. I think its 500.

Just to do the audio processing, your soundcard won't
matter. Unfortunately, if you want to record into your
computer, your looking at between 250-1000 for an entry
level soundcard. I would suggest the "Soundblaster Audigy"
Pro or Platinum. Those go for about 230 to 280 at most
reasonable distributors. Those prices are in cdn.

that is only if you want the stuff you record into the
computer to sound good...
