I was wondering if someone could dlear this up for me. I am
a bit confused. I have heard that he might impose a draft.
But i have seen an interview where he said he wouldnt.

some people are absolutely sure he will. I don't know. I do
know he talked with president canada about not letting any
kids in.

Bush kept repeating it over and over during the first debate
that he will not reinstitute the draft. he added that the
volunteer draft is quite functional, keeping the flow of
military quantity stable when needed.

it's not gonna happen.

the military neither needs, nor wants a shitload of kids
that don't want to be there. our military has become a very
technical job. even ground soldiers have to go through
extensive training. the days of drafting a kid, handing him
a gun, and sending him into the battlezone are over. a
draft isn't needed anymore.

that's just a scare tactic that was used by both sides
during the election.

check congress' website.. the proposed date for the
conscription is/was june 15, 2005

it is rediculously unrealistic to think that this
overstretched military force can stand the minimum 4 more
years of occupation without reaching out beyond its
volunteers.

The Service act of 2003's title is: "To provide for the
common defense by requiring that all young persons in the
United States, including women, perform a period of military
service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of
the national defense and homeland security, and for other
purposes." - congress.gov

that's not a draft. that's required military service such
as israel has.

and, it won't be the enrollment that crumples our ability to
stay engaged in our millitary campaigns, it'll be the
economy.

that's DEFINATELY not true. he doesn't give half a fuck if
there's available money to pay for his war.. he spent
hundreds of billions without taxing those most capable of
paying for it. spending w/o taxing.

offline epohs from )C: on 2004-11-03 14:47 [#01381755]

we've got the manpower to run these wars if we absolutely
need to. the average duration of service for an american
soldier during WWII was 33 months. today, if we've got a
soldier deployed for 18 months they are considered very over
deployed.

if the need arises, we'll extend tours of duty. as
unpopular as it would be, it'd be much more popular than a
draft.

it doesn't matter what bush wants. if he runs the deficit
up to mind bendingly high levels, the dollar will become
worthless on international markets, people will dump their
dollars overnight, and our economy will tank. game over.

he has to know that. if he doesn't, who cares, it's out of
his hands.

no money = no bullets & no food for soldiers = no war

they've already started doing that.. they started that at
the end of last year.. and the truth is we dont' have the
manpower to handle this war and the hundreds of other
campaigns we're running all over the world for 5 more years
.. esp. w/ afghanistan and whatever country he invades next

offline theo himself from +- on 2004-11-03 14:53 [#01381776]

dude, he's doing all of that.

they're not even paying for armor for the troops and their
humvees are not reinforced adequately for combat situations.
troops have to have their parents buy them the armor they
need over the internets!

they're extending tours; yes. and they will continue to
extend them.

any politician knows that it is political suicide to instate
a draft, and what's a politician's #1 concern? his/her
job.

not to mention, i really and truly don't believe that a
draft would be very helpful in today's army. if things get
so bad that the american army needs massive quantities of
untrained soldiers running around on the battlefield, then
things have gotten so bad that humanity only has a few days
left anyway, so it's not really that important.

well, the thing is, the neo-con administration no longer has
to play it safe and do the minimal pandering or show the
minimal restraint that they had to do in an election year..
it's carte blanche for real now ..they dont have to worry
about losing any office that is up to the people to
decide/choose.. this is like lbj/nixon all over again.

Is not registering for selective service one of those hardly
enforced "illegal" things? I'm pretty sure I registered
because I applied for a government job once and had to. If I
wanted to be president, I would just do whatever I could to
get in there and then once I was in just do whatever the
hell I want, not worrying about being reelected and just
accepting serving only one term, but doing whatever I want
during that term.

so long as the economy stays shit, there will be plenty of
poor people who will be more than willing to join the army
because they don't really have any other decent employment
opportunites... that and the fact that all they really need
is another attack on american soil to spur on another
massive flow of reactionary volunteers...

"Our all-volunteer army will remain an all-volunteer army,"
Bush began, to cheers from supporters here in Florida...

"My opponent seems to be willing to say almost anything he
thinks will benefit him politically," he said. "After
standing on the stage, after the debates, I made it very
plain we will not have an all-volunteer army."

"And yet this week..." he continued, before suddenly
realizing the gaffe and shouting: "We will have an
all-volunteer army."

"Let me restate that: We will not have a draft. No matter
what my opponent tries to tell people and scare them, we
will have an all-volunteer army," promised the president,
who is known for frequent verbal stumbles.
