ok, for some reason I have not updated the computer I have
at home with anything noteworthy since.. a long time ago..
it works fine for what I use it for (recording and
sequencing music), anyway... however, I recently got some
parts from another computer, and among them were a
cd-burner... someone told me they've got
system-requirements, but I put it in anyway, and it worked
fine as a cd-reader. I don't have the net (nor the net 2)
on it, and therefore I can't download shit and stuff and
assfunk, but I was thinking I'd test a cd-burning
software-thingie that I could download and burn onto a cd
here at work and shizzle.. but I don't know if it's worth it
the hassle.. if it doesn't work...

now, to the point: will a cd-burner of.. pretty recent date,
work AS a cd-burner in a pII 266 mhz comp with win98 if it
works as a cd-READER?

and.. to anyone who'll want to say: "get a new computer;"
yeah, yeah... I'm saving for a zoom portastudio, and then I
will discard the comp.. I don't really use it for anything
but making music anyway.

me neither.. but I just don't want to spend lots of time
running around this place, looking for a cd-burner to burn
the cd-burning software if I don't know if it's going to
work or not...

well, the system you have is not important, what is
important is software u will use to record cd's. get Nero v6
opr Alcohol. and every cd-burnenr works also as reader. no
matter what is it called and what the date of producing it.

Yes, it'll work, unless the drive is made by Pusk. This is
most unlikely, though, as I've just made them up!

it'll work fine.

i used to have a 6X cdrom drive in a 286, and i had a burner
working on a 486.

you'll probably find that you won't be able to burn at the
full speed through as older system's can't keep up the high
transfer rate. if you find you're burning coasters, cut
down the X's.

yeah, I'll probably burn at 2x anyway.. I'm probably mostly
going to burn "glass masters" or whatever they call them,
and I want the cd to be compatible with all players (I've
found that portable cd-players often have trouble with
high-speed-burnt cds...)

oh, how I wish I had one of these

burn.

yeah, but it also preserves the integrity of the disk...

I'll just put it on when I'm not using the computer for a
while.

and I like to shit, eat and drink coffee, but not at the
same time, mind you...

See if there's a firmware update for the drive, as well.
It might help the speed/compatibility.
Try the manufacturer's website.
Enabling DMA on the drive will help as well, if it supports
it.

I have a fairly recent CD burner in my 233mhz pII with 128mb
ram... it works fine. But I have Windows ME on there.

You'd be better running a distro. of Linux.
Even if it's one of those bootable tryouts.
Or you could be super classy like AFX and use OSX.
