Idea for an ambient album...

Does anyone else find that the combination of background
noise/poor speaker quality of mobile phones makes for really
scary answerphone messages when there's no one actually
talking to you? E.g. when someone's accientally dialed you
without realising the phone is on? An ex-friend txted me
saying she wanted to top herself then about 1/2 hour later I
got an answerphone that sounded like running water (bathtub)
and faint sobs . I got a nasty mental image of her slitting
her wrists in the bath.

Similair things have happened before (though none so
creepy). I was wondering if anyone else has had similair
experiences? It's something about the sound
quality/distortion tha tmakes them (Mobile phone answerphone
messages) sound bleak and sinister, unless there is an
identifiable voice.

Oh yeah, you could have a "lustmordesque" ambient album
consisting of these kinds of answerphone messages.

I've been looking for a way of getting decent recordings of
answerphone messages for a while - why can't phones have
line out ports?!

great idea,
you should get a page set up on the web where people can
post messages for you to use!

If you read the post about me breaking up with my
girlfriend, I really wanted to record the message from her
when she dumped me. Her voice was doing really weird things.
Funny what amuses me...

I think the collecting of them on a website is a good idea!
Please can people email them to me 128kb/sec or less quality
mp3s. No files more than 3mb as I only have a yahoo account!

I receive all my work voicemails into Outlook as wav files.
I have quite a funny collection of twat customers leaving
absurd messages.

So buy our Unified Messaging system!

sounds like a good idea to me, how did Rich (AFX) get that
one of his rents singing him happy bday? that sounded pretty
fucked up, but cool!

Apparently I talk in my sleep, so I wanna record that and
then make that into a song! :-)

If what he's said about them in interviews is true, rich's
parents are quite odd and it wouldn't suprise me if they
just rang him up and left that message on his phone.

Check out the work of SCANNER ... Robin Rimbaud... pretty
much along the lines of your idea...

He's done a few albums using a handheld radio scanner to
sample peoples mobile phone conversations... it's soooo
effective & it's odd how much emotion can be created from
tiny little soundbites... my personal fave track is called
"Safety"...

Not sure what he's upto nowadays...I've seen a recent album
by him & DJSPOOKY but I'm not 100% sure if he uses his
scanner on this one...better to check his earlier albums
(Mass Observation???)..my memory is shite..

Get thyself to Soulseek...

I've got a track by Scanner ("Mass observation, claude young
scan") and I've heard the DJ SPooky album that has "Dr.
Satan's echo chamber" on it.

I'll have another listen to the scanner track now, didn't
know about the handheld scanner though, thanks for the
info. It's a really good idea, shame that he's already done
it :)

Some friends and I (Jedi Chris- I think Fraser Collins was
involved if I remember correctly) used a CB radio to listen
to these 2 guy's conversation then played "Smack my Bitch
up" by the prodigy loudly over their conversation. They
switched channels after that!
