i absolutely love this album...definitely one of best
albums this year for me. it's a mixture of acoustic oriented
rock music, rock music and electronica...i think everyone
should check this album...honestly :) especially if you like
moodier/melancolic stuff!

review&samples

is there no end to brilliant icelandic artists?? :)

a friend of mine and he's starting to get pretty big. it's
exciting to see others getting into him. it's good music

i met him on thursday after i saw four tet and adem. adem
was good but he said that four tet was a bit of a
dissapointment and that was what i thought too.

was four tet too noisy?

offline Atli from Reykjavík (Iceland) on 2004-10-25 05:46 [#01371124]

well...a bit yes. he fucked up his songs real good. they
weren't as sweet as they are on his cd's.

but his gig wasn't all bad, wasn't that bad at all maybe but
i expected something totally different.

you had the same experience as me, then.. only I thought his
concert was PURE crap.

downloaded some samples before I went to check his concert..
sounded nice.. went to the concert and died of artificial
sound-enema. some call it "dancing up the music," I call it
not being able to connect wires.

however, to the point, mugison sounded nice! another nice
album added to my list of "got to get" today.

i might have a different experience with four tet...his
music sounds a bit too sweet for my likings so perhaps i
would prefer the live stuff.

that live set i downloaded sounded really good from what i
remember..

well, it has some nice parts i guess but overall it could
have been better. he didn't play for that long either.

i couldn't go to see mugison unfortunately. i'm definately
going to the get that niceland soundtrack though.

on saturday i was working for a friend of mine driving some
band stuff from concert places to their hotels. met bands
like keane, the stills, the shins and bravery. don't know
much about all of them but those guys were pretty nice.

great..you apperantly have quite a music scene upthere..
as for mugison - 'niceland' is awesome and 'lonely mountain'
is little less awesome but still very very good!

yeah, the liveshow would fit you nicely from what I
gather...

I think he's done some remix-ish stuff on Smalltown
Supersound that probably would be more to your liking as
well, but I can't find it... I think he's done something
together with Martin Horntveth or something...

another icelandic artist i've heard good things about that
you should check out tolstoyed, stafrænn hákon. found out
two weeks ago that he's the boyfriend of my friend's sister.

yeah, lonely mountain is good but i'm hoping niceland is
better and from what you say it probably is.

although i was a bit disappointed with four tet, adem was
pretty good despite of some sound problems. i have to check
their mutual band fridge, don't know if they're any good
though but they probably are.

mastah, i'll look up for that, cheers!

atli, i have stafraenn's 'skvettir edik a ref' and i love
it...beautiful stuff. iceland is full of great musicians.
btw, when is your album coming out? :)

I think Four Tet is good live. It could have been a bit
boring if the music was like on the cd, so I think he is
doing right by "dancing up" the music.

btw, if you like hakon, you might want to check out a
spanish band called balago and their first album
'erm'...it's very similar..perhaps a bit more dark, but one
of my favourite albums in this genre!

i've only heard a few songs by him but i like him, and his
humour. his songtitles and albumtitles are so fucked up.
stafrænn hákon means "digital hákon" but hákon isn't but
hákon isn't even his name.

nice to hear, i'll definately check them out.

Heh, my album will be out in a few years i hope :).

mortsto..kind of what im thinking...i never like to hear
them play same stuff i can hear on records..although from
what dm and atli are saying, it sounds like he's quite
different live...i'll have to see for myself i think :)

definitely isn't funny though. oh, and im looking forward to

i have nothing against artist mixing up their stuff live but
it's so totally different from his albums and at times i was
thinking "what the fuck is he doing!".

i'll check out that balago stuff as well.

i don't know about iceland and all that "great artist-thing"
though. i think they might get more attention since they're
from iceland. doesn't make them less great but somehow i
think that the country helps them become better known
worldwide.

you can't read a review about icelandic music unless it's
partially about either björk, sigur rós or volcanos, hot
springs and glaciers. i'm getting a bit tired of that kind
of reviews.

Ok.. I'll go into more detail about his liveshow for you..

he had two laptops and a sampler.

he put on his regular tracks (split up into loops on his
sampler and laptops so he could switch on and off the
different sounds, so that part of the show was mostly
playback-ish.. then, what he actually did live was to put on
some static, twist the knobs of the sampler so that the
loop-time/pitch of the samples was upped to the
unrecogniseable and turned into a squeaking noise that my
right ear still has nightmares about (when I manage to
ignore the tinnitus and get some sleep). however, it seems
his liveshow is always the same, and it's always only 30
minutes long... the sample on his homepage is almost
identical to what I heard, and from what Atli is saying, I
think he did the same stuff there.. he plays the normal
stuff, and then goes off into oblivion with noise that'll
blast your eardrums.

yeah, same thing as for Bergen a while back (just a bit less
international)... everything that came out of here turned
into hits on the radio... even though it was all the same
uniform shit like Sgt Petter and St. Thomas. It was crap,
and I'm glad that æra is past.

offline Atli from Reykjavík (Iceland) on 2004-10-25 06:24 [#01371172]

that's exactly what he did here, and his show was only 30
minutes long too. and yeah, he did this uncomfortable
squeaking noise as well a few times.

you think? because i have no idea they're from iceland
untill i check out album..though it's true i see them
mentioned and therefore decide to check them out. perhaps
they have a real good distribution and promotors or
something - i wish other countries would have that, if that
really is the case. i live in a pretty small country as
well, but it's still like 5 times bigger than iceland (2 mio
citizens), and i haven't heard a band i'd really like -
honestly.

as for balago - i just gave it a listen again, and it is
superb stuff - if you can check out these two songs in
particula; 'maccabea' and 'pendulos'...amazing music.

you should definately check him out and see if it's
something that you like. we only have about 280.000 people
here so slovenia is probably 10x bigger population wise :)

though. the part where i went through was pretty simular to
croatia and that whole istria area, which was nice.

you must have passed it though, since there's only one other
road bus could go from the airport to istria :)
unless you wen't through italy..but that'd be silly.

ljubljana only has about 300.000 citizens so it's pretty
small anyway...it's about 20 kms from the airport, so if
you'd look to your left when you were driving to istria
you'd notice it, unless the weather was shitty..

we landed in italy, drove through slovenia and stayed in
croatia for two weeks and drove back to italy again. i
didn't notice any big city or anything but it was pretty
dark when we landed and when we were leaving i sat on the
left side of the bus. i might have missed it but i doubt it
:).

well... reykjavík is only 1/3 of that size but it's the
biggest place around here. there's nothing special to it
either imo.

well...we were going to croatia but we landed in an airport
in italy. to get to croatia we had to drive through the
slovenian boarder on our way to croatia. when we went home
we had to drive the same way back.

oh i see...you landed on trieste airport (ronchi)..i thought
it was brnik. you only saw very little of slovenia then -
and not particulary good part either..especially in the peek
of the tourist season :)
you must have passed trieste though, and that's a pretty big
city - it was one of bigger european cities a century
ago...plenty stories about that city - im really intrigued
by it and am surely going to look into all those books one
day..it's kind of misterious to me for some reason..

yeah, we landed in and passed trieste but didn't see much of
that one either, unfortunately, because it was very dark
when we landed. on our way back home everybody were in such
a hurry so we didn't have a chance then either. i bet the
balkan nations hate the tourist time :)

was talking about.

damnit...gotta go back to class,
thanks for the talk.
