I had that more or less with "obstacle 2" and later on with
"NYC".

"NYC" makes me sigh and feel kind of dreamy. it somehow
gives me quite a positive feeling, especially the "New York
cares" lyric, eventhough the rest of the song seems to be
quite negative, lyrically.

that REM reference that fleetmouse mentions I don't get at
all, either.

"evil", the 2nd song on "antics" I believe, is excellent.

Yeah, they are both powerful...

NYC is great, I love the 'turn on the bright lights'
refrain. I think his voice is a massive factor in the band's
power. He sounds like a robot.

I remember reading a best of 2003 list a while back, the
journo made some remark about the album being like 'fleeting
encounters in the night' and I think that about sums it up.
Its like PJ Harvey 'stories from the city...' in that to me
I just imagine sitting by the Thames on a bitterly cold
night in some kind of noirish romantic film world.

Hehe I forgot I really loved this band :D

I think their brilliant too, like the whole Antics album
infact, don't listen to it enough though, herehere.

Antics is bland, but Turn On is great! Saw them live in
concert last year, but they played way too much from
Antics... Didn't even play Hands Away, those jerks.

I like interpol very much, but every once in a while it gets
mentally exausting to listen to the constant disco-ish beat
through nearly every song even if it compliments the music
entirely... I realise it's 'depressing bubblegum pop/rock'
or something.
I played 'Turn on the Bright Lights' at a party once and
group of people were talking about it, thinking that I was
listening to The Killers. It made me want to take it out
and never listen to it again, even if I really liked it. I
guess they are a bit similar, but it made me want to throw
up excessively.
I remember reading in some review were they refered to The
Killers as "Interpol times Newfound Glory." I guess that's
a pretty good comparison.

I think Antics is much better, I saw them last year also,
but I enjoyed the lack of TOTBL tracks. So I win. The singer
is very boring on stage (also his lyrics are really stupid
but who cares... but seriously 'the subway she is a porno'?
get the fuck out) and the guitarist is very fun to watch.

Haven't listened to much Interpol since I last posted in
this thread, but still are one of my favourites! I don't
want to spoil them by listening to them as background
music.

I should point out, that there is an excellent song called
Song Seven which was recorded during the Antics sessions but
wasn't put on the album. You can get it from the 'secret
area' unlocked by the CD or obv soulsk ect. I really really
recommend people download it because its better than several
of the songs on the album.

Also, they recorded a small piece for Six Feet Under called
Direction, which is mostly instrumental, but worth a
download. Atmospheric as you would imagine...

Some of the lyrics are lame(Her stories are boring and stuff
/ She's always calling my bluff) but some are perfect, I
think. A lot of the refrains are really goosepimply
powerful, within the contexts of the music. As I said ages
ago, I love the PDA bit "You're so cute when you're
sedated..." - sounds lame reading it but is perfect for that
song I think. "And you'll go stabbing / Yourself in the
neck" - another bit that I think is perfect for the mood of
the song...

you are right, also I like some of the lyrics that don't
make sense, but some of them are just too much. I like the
'personality is scar tissue, it travels south with disuse'
bit in Not Even Jail for example.

my second complaint is that Next Exit is poop and I always
skip it, it's not necessary

I appreciated Antics 100x more than Turn on the Bright
Lights.

The lyrics don't make sense, but neither do 90% of other
bands out there. Interpol just doesn't try to hide it.

if you can stand another opinion, i've tired of most rock
music but interpol are very, very good. i didn't like
"antics" much when i first heard it, one day it just
clicked. "evil" encapsulates everything transcendant that
pop music is capable of...

Next Exit is the worst of any of their songs, for sure!

I'd love to see how they record/mic/mix their drums, even if
the drumming is a bit mediocre usually. The recoding sounds
very old school tape-punchy Bonham-ish, but more clear and
defined by digital mixing or something. Something about the
simplicity of it too.. if it were to be any less
bombastically punchy/driving/primeval their sound nearly
wouldn't work at all I think.
The funky-assed bass playing is probably a lot of what makes
the rhythms so damn catchy though.

they're one of my favourite rock bands. song seven is indeed
good. i don't like the version with the lame "rap" though.
the re-worked version is better although i feel that the end
isn't as powerful compared to the original.

i criticise them only in that the
vocalist seems a bit precomposed
some people love it i think its okay.

It took a while for Antics to grow on me since I thought the
vocals were really grating but now I think I like it a lot.
I'm listening to it now and it has a lot of fun songs on it.

Their first album is wicked. Antics has it's moments, but
overall it's definitely a let down after their first album.

the new album is grrrrrrrrrrreat. i don't know what all the
reviewers are complaining about. well, i do know what
they're complaining about but i don't agree with them. it's
my favourite brooding indie rock album of the year and
doesn't sound like an attempt at a mainstream smash like
antics did.

believe me when i say this is their most enjoyable album

i'll have to get a bigger set of lungs because i don't think
i'm singing my praises loudly enough. i wish i could tell
the band that it's their best effort yet and not to listen
to the critics. i'm worried they're starting to feel
pressured to go in a different direction.
