Can anyone please point me towards documentation arguing
the benefits of mov over divx/vise versa?

you're arguing apples versus cars.

mov is a file container, that's all. divx strictly usually
refers to the hacked-up variant of mpeg4 video used inside
avi files.

btw, now that apple supports standard mpeg4 audio/video
inside mov, and it's a standard format that'll play in loads
of players without needing to load external codecs
(including some dvd players), i tend to say mov+mpeg4 is the
way to go.

divx was an interesting feat at the time, but it's a
horribly hacked format.
