A Perfect Circle "Imagine"

I like it. surprisingly. though that maynard-james keenan
kid is actually an artist, no? not just some metal idiot..
he has good ideas and is respected as an artist.. or am I
off on that?

anyway the drastic shift in tone of this song is quite
appropriate.. I was hoping I'd see a cover of something from
the imagine album this year - as that album is now (2004)
far more relevant than it has ever been. it's almost as if
the 1971 version is saying "this is what we could have if we
just stop what we're doing now" and the 2004 version is
saying "this is something we'll never ever have because we
ddidn't stop what we were doing and we continue to do it.."
(?) it's like a dirge/elegy for lennon's ideals

i really dislike this. its not at all subtle and adds
nothing to the original. i'm not even a huge fan of the
original song, but its simplicity was a virtue. this one is
overblown in all the wrong ways.

Come on, as you well know, there is no such thing as a
perfect circle. My maths teacher told me.

It's pretty dire, just what I expected and feared... the
dreaded reversal of tones, as subtle as the apocalypse. But
I guess that's the point. Man, do I ever hate those MASSIVE
drums. And there were too many nice little touches removed
from it, like that ascending piano line and the nice
understated segue into the ''you many say I'm a dreamer''
part. Now... the mix just gets a bit louder and denser. No
charm. And the piano just sounds uncharismatic now, doesn't
resonate or do anything except play chords, it doesn't sound
like it's made out of ivory... the original had a nice fat
sound to it.

I could go on all day about what I don't like about this new
take on Imagine, but it wouldn't matter much since these
complaints aren't universal and I know a lot of people that
like this cover. I don't think it's horrible, or that
Maynard's heart wasn't in the right place, but this is just
boring, no surprises here. I don't put much stock into the
''different cultural context'' argument, so it's the music
that fumbles it for me. I think John would snicker at it/is
snickering at it. I hope they had more fun with the other
covers on the album.

I think the fact that it's a john lennon song automatically
made for a drastically/diametrically distinct cover version
(in terms of tone and its complete disregard for any of the
original music) most people when covering beatles/lennon
usually expect or feel they're expected to stick to the
script and not waiver. so this might be a play on that.. not
being over reverential to the original just because it's
john lennon's .. they might've overdone it, but for some
reason it works for me.. I really don't know a lot about
tool/perfect circle
