is a GBA SP worth it or not?

since i'll be wasting a lot of time waiting outside/in the
university/in the train soon again because of university and
since i have money and my birthday soon, i'm hesitating
whether i should take one or not... i was against it because
it's really expensive for a portable console, and i barely
ever used that old gameboy color anyway (wasn't really that
fun compared to a home console), but i'm hesitating again...
what do you think?

or maybe a x-box instead, i don't like microsoft nor the
controllers and i already have a ps2 and a gamecube but
there are some games that are really tempting on it...

I don't think getting an SP is worth it now. I'd save for a
PSP or a DS, although you'll have to wait a while for those.
I was thinking about getting an xbox the other day but there
are so many rubbish games for every great one so I'm not
going to bother.

lot's of good games for the gba (playing fire emblem
lately)

yet you can play all of them on an emulator for free...

so it's your call

i would follow horsefactory's advice and wait for the next
gen handhelds

you'll be kicking yourself in the arse if you don't wait,
because they both boast wireless functionality

I think GBA games are WAY too expensive. Here, at least...
they're almost as much as the console games, not worth it at
all. Most of them are crap, though there's some gems. If you
have a place around you that sells used GBA games, you'd get
much better value (I just use the emulators... I don't go
anywhere).

Obviously part of the reason for wanting a portable is to
entertain yourself when you're waiting around university and
the train... but I'd still go for the Xbox before spending
money on a GBA. Ninja Gaiden's easily the best game of the
year. And the system is picking up steam. Its library is
farrrr better than the Gamecube's now, and it'll pull ahead
even more in the next 3 months.

I'm extremely wary of the next gen handhelds. The PSP will
probably be absurdly expensive, although Sony is going to
make sure its library is enormous... Metal Gear Acid looks
PS2 quality. The DS is REALLY odd... ugly ugly grainy
graphics, but an interesting gimmick. Who knows whether
Nintendo will be able to round up the 3rd party support for
it.

But I guess one of them will have to thrive... we can't be
playing 16 bit handhelds forever.

"I think GBA games are WAY too expensive."

> me too. 40€ for a GBA game (except the NES ones which
are at 19€), 60€ for a console game. (both are too much
anyway)

GBA's are 32bit..... There are loads of classic games out on
the GBA so I say get one second hand with a few games off
ebay & sell it if you don't like it.... that way you cant go
wrong.

some of the games you can get on the gba almost seem worth
the money to me, mostly if you'er into platformers, every
single castlevania game is a pure classic, and metroid,
final fantasy tactics, advance wars, guardian heroes
advance, sonic advance, monkey ball, zelda, zone of enders,
harvet moon,

download some emulation first I woudl say, I can happily
play gba games on my computer, fulscreen and barely notice
that I'm playing a game designed to a small screen let alone
a handheld, the games are solid as fuck

i have one and actually play it!

if you have a certain amount of nostalgia regarding video
games it's great. playing zelda and mario 3 again was really
cool, secret of mana, the megaman series (rockman),
castlevania, metroid etc.... aces!

Yes Castlevania 1&3 are fantastic. I'd go so far as to say 3
is one of the best platformers ever. Warioware is a good
laugh too. I mainly use mine for NES emulation nowadays
though and even that isn't used much (I avoid public
transport and any queuing like the plague).

Yeah I want to get one but I wanna make sure I can get one
of those things I can download games onto and add
emulation.

Is there any other way to emulate nes on it without buying
one of those 300$ flash things ?

The GBA is to 32 bit gaming what the Jaguar was to 64. Not
to mention to weak, sub-SNES soundchip.

The Castlevania games for GBA are all awesome, Circle of the
Moon is still my favorite GBA game, to this day... there's
also some good RPGs. The Golden Sun games are solid, and
Shining Force is out now (not as good as the Genesis games,
though).

Tons of great games, but I personally wouldn't shell out the
cash these things sell for. It's not like they're pouring
funds into developing these short games... but they still
sell them for hefty prices. But half priced used, that's a
good deal.

IMHO the games are just too frickin expensive. It's the
reason the GBA's are so low, Nintendo gets their profit over
the licensing of their games. I mean is a 20 year old
Excitebike or Pac-Man really worth TWENTY BUCKS??? What
about every other cardtridge, which are always limited in
gameplay (except those RPG that last you 20 hours of
gametime), that are like 30$ each.

It's really the # of games you want to buy that will
determinate your budget.

If you don't mind spending $149 and waiting till November
21st get the Nintendo DS. It will be backwards compatible
so you can still play Advance games.

its the only game system worth buying at the moment.

Good plan, I totally forgot about that backwards
compatibility. God bless that. Yeah, you may as well wait
for the DS. In fact, I think I'll buy it on the day it comes
out... I don't even have a GBA. That feature will make the
hefty price tag a bit more bearable.

ymenard- yeah, those retro-games are very overpriced, as is
everything else. Nintendo is making a fortune on the GBA.
They've probably got a well stocked war chest somewhere. Not
that the gamers are benefit from it too much.
