addiction is the key element you are missing, you lose control and become addicted.
drugs alter your state of mind, they control you. you cannot relate them to anything such as books, movies, web sites, porn, all of these things will not take hold of you the way that drugs will.

thats not entirely true. tv, porn, movies, music, any kind of media can become addictive in the same manner as a drug and can lead to self destructive behavior. it just doesn't happen very often. at the end of the day, it always comes down to the individual, and alot of people are prone to drug addiction for whatever reasons.

i thought of this when i was posting my reply, but drugs take it a step further i think, tell me if i am wrong, but to me there is someting more destructing in abusing weed than tv addiction or something. maybe not sex addiction though, good point on that.

i'm sure its been scientifically proven that weed or any hard drug for that matter is quite a bit more dangerous than television, but the sort of mind numbing effects seem to be the same.

the only thing that seperates tv, chocolate, cigarette, sexual, etc... addiction from "drug" addiction is the legallity.
you may think it's silly, because nobody kills someone for chocolate... but, make it illegal and i guarantee people will be dying. the street value of chocolate will go through the roof, and a blackmarket will develop.
it is the fact that "drugs" are illegal is what makes them so dangerous.

they are different, of course... i thought we were talking about addiction.
however, my point is that there are already laws against operating machinery while under the influence.
if someone is caught doing this they should be punished... but, i shouldn't be punished because there is a possibility that i may operate machinery while under the influence.

and i always thought anythign had the potential for addiction. liek rape? murder? cutting? food?
obesity is the number 1 cause of death in the USA. should food be illegal? it's obviously a huge addiction.
it's not about the substances, it's about the people who use them. making a substance illegal will fix someone's appeal for addiction.
and doing drugs now and then does not make you addicted. i don't care how much meth, or coke you've done.. you dont become automatically addicted. it goes deeper than that.

- legalize drugs.
- regulate their use like we currently do hard liquor. this will create vast sums of revenue for the gov't.
- invest that extra money in education, REAL scientific research into the effects of said drugs, and social programs.
- enforce laws that already exist.

"so propose a system that will eliminate some of the problems. "
i already did! check it out:
drugs should be decriminalized so that
- there aren't jails filled with sick people who can't control the crimes they commit.
- there are no more drug-related crimes. - there are no more illegal drugs coming in and therefore no more drug dealers or drug market.
all this while simultaneously spending money to set up drug rehab programs that actually work (this has been done in successful tests in some european countries) and education to prevent people from taking the drugs.

even johnny phd might like his fries supersized, even he is behaving as a consumer,
example, when i was in college i hate SUV's, they represented all that i hated about the us and consumerism and excess
as soon as i started a family and all that jazz, i find myself more and more needing a vehicle with the capabilities of an SUV, have i been brainwashed, yes and no, i am smart enough to know i dont really need one, but i do need one because my family has increased in size, thus i need more space and all that stuff,
