Due recent events (both here and in real life), it has come to my attention that I dont think things through before I say them. I offend everyone at work, and random people in public. I think it might have to do with a combination of being 1. brutally honest 2. jerk 3. wiseass-jokester 4. insensitive 5. moron (which includes speaking without thinking) Actually most of these would probably be solved if I worked on #5. However (in all honesty) if I actually shut up and thought about what I was about to say, people would really think I'm wierd, or slow because (I swear to god) it would take me about 20 seconds to 10 minutes to think through my answers/comments before announcing them out loud. So my question is this: Should I... 1. Not repress myself and keep doing what I'm doing and end up apologizing/clarifying for everything later? or 2. Force myself to really think about every possible misinterpretation of my speech in order to make everyone happy but myself? (i'm sure I allready fucked up this thread and will be shown my mistakes very soon, but thats okay, because I suppose I'll learn what not to do, for future reference) |

you sound just like me in some ways. i don't think you're stupid at all, you probably just need to really take into consideration how people may react depending on the situation - think before you say something. i'm not totally sure what the answer is, but i have a feeling it's a combination of both. and the bleeding is unsightly - isn't there a treatment for that? |

yeah i know, its starting to get outta control. The bleeding that is. As for being offensive, its like, whatever the majority is in the room, I have to counter it. For example: A bunch of Christians are in the room discussing how great jesus is and stuff. I actually dont care, but since I'm physically there and having to deal with it, I'll balance things out by going "Jesus sucks" just to see what happens. Thats just one point. A different example occured last weekend with a girl. She was all over me but then said "I dont think I should do this" and I asked "why" and she didn't know. So i gave her the old motivational speech of "life is too short. before you know it you'll be 60 and no one will want you" Thats pretty borderline offensive, and I realized it pretty quickly and said "i'm just kidding, i have a strange sense of humour, you'll be a very beautiful girl until you're 60" (i lied about it, but thats besides the point). Anyways all she heard was "no one wants you", but I didn't even find this out until after she kissed me and left and then I had to hear about it from her sister. I felt shitty because I upset her sister who is pretty cool, but yea... I ruined everyones night that time, all because I said something (slightly) stupid. |

I dont honestly believe Jesus sucks. Its just that I like seeing people react. Because I think for a split second that they might question it and go "hey does jesus suck?". It kinda shakes them out of their mindset, even if its brief. |

Most Christians would, actually, except they're not as easy to recognize as Christians because they don't spend every minute of their lives talking about it. As far as I can tell, zany "Christian" fundamentalists are more widespread in the US than here, though, so YMMV. This part of the country is about 75% nonreligious, and being Christian means having to deal with various kinds of teasing - but I've never seen anyone not handle this reasonably and sanely. For example, there was a Catholic in my Greek course, and he had to put up with gentle poking both from the nonreligious and the Protestants among us, but it was always well understood that it was all in good fun. Or one religion/music teacher we had, whose courses were always full of people not taking them seriously; he always dealt with it in the most friendly manner imaginable. Less pleasantly, some jerk on a small message board where I was an admin wrote a lengthy and bizarre post insulting me for going to church (and playing an instrument), but I think he was just looking for things to hurl at me because I'd stopped him posting pr0n. (On a different, only slightly related note: there was a group of people in school who were constantly trying to offend me by yelling "Jesus!" at me, presumably because of my appearance and because they'd heard somewhere that I'm a Christian. I'm still not sure why they thought that would make a good insult.) I suppose my answer to your question is: try not to offend people, but mostly in the sense of "don't try to offend people". Think before you speak, but not so much that you don't get around to the actual speaking. And stuff. I don't know you too well, but FWIW I don't think I've ever been offended by one of your posts here. |

The only halfway intelligent thing I've read in this thread so far is from r40f. I can't believe some of the closed-minded things people here say, (maybe about other supposedly closed-minds) even if they are joking. It is one thing to form a generalisation of people, or to, inside yourself, consider them as being less than totally open-minded, but to completely disregard a vast opinion/theory/a person's beliefs entirely, and write it off as being a load of shit, even though you offer no explanation more than their's, is just about as close minded as them not listening or accepting your beliefs because they differ from theirs.. etc... etc...
