this is pretty good rhetoric. he (or at least, his speechwriters) are aware that his position as an action hero actor is somewhat ridiculous, and so this is tinged with just enough self-mockery and light-heartedness to pull it off. he used his 'disadvantage' (i.e., not a native speaker, immigrant) as an advantage -- to 'prove' the republican party is for immigrants etc. he's a clown, but a clown with good speechwriters. i bet, without actually checking, his was met with thundering applause. |
