google.

yahoo, though it does have some search engine tendencies is
more of a directory... like a card catalog in a library.
and, i don't think it uses spiders like google. so, the
data that's in there doesn't seem quite as up to date.

i could be wrong, but i know it took like two years for my
website to change categories after it went from a failed
unexplaned phenomena site to just a personal site. even
though i tried and tried to switch categories manually, AND
switched the content over completely. google's spiders
would've noticed on their own within a week or two that the
content had changed, and updated their indexes
automatically.

that really made me question how many other sites were
categorized incorrectly on yahoo.

actually that definition is pretty much overly complicated.

basically a spider is:

a computer program that prowls the internet looking for
publicly accessible resources that can be added to a
database; the database can then be searched with a search
engine.

and yahoo doesn't use em.

i'm not sure i understand... they're both seperate
independant public companies... at least i'm pretty sure
they are.

i don't think anyone really owns them. stockholders sorta
do.

The search engine and directory at Yahoo! are separate
entities, though there's some combining at the front-end.

The directory is put together by hand, the search was/is
provided by Google. That may have changed now though because
I know they bought a company to provide them with their own
search engine capability.

now i wonder on what terms do ggl or yho work?

i mean ok,they're search engines, but each link one of em has
is partially owned by em,right?

google & yahoo are both just lists of websites.

they don't own any of the sites they list just because
they're listed there.

i could make a list of websites i like and put it on my
site... but, really i would have no affiliation with those
sites at all. just like many sites are linked to on
xltronic.

it's just that google and yahoo are really usefull, so lots
of people go there.
