yes, I was bored and needed something to clear my mind

(all of this information is stuff that I have figured out
myself, I haven't ever done any real research, so I am more
than likely wrong in one or two area's but as far as I
"know" all of this appears to be right)

I'm really bored so I decided to draw up a diagram to show
how I managed to get 8 different sources working using:

old, inhereted and donated, mostly broken audio equipment
a $33 4 channel mono mixer,
about $50 worth of cables and plugs
a $40 cd walkman from go-lo (it only need to sit still, so
it works fine despite being a cheap piece of crap)

and I did all this without without any impedance problems or
(too much) sound quality loss,

and not only that but I'm still able to record in full
quality, and listen on headphones at full quality,

here is the diagram, below is the explanation

pic

first of all my main stereo with speakers takes a line
in
from my 4 channel mixer and takes mic in from my
organ, this is turned up full ball for impedance reasons,

plugged into my $33 shitty excuse for a mixer:

channel 1
Cd player

channel 2
Main Stereo/Aux
(featuring)
tape player (best quality of the lot)
Record player
(input)
Old Record player
(featuring)
tape player
radio (triple j because it's all I can get, I want 2ser
tho)
turntable with no drive (I can still make noise scratch
etc..)
(input)
microphone

channel 3
pc refund (for sound/video editing and games)

channel 4
pc fortress (for winamp, net stuff)

the mixer is powered, which helps impedance problems yet
again, it acts as a preamp but because I'm combing two
channels per input (that makes 8 all up) it's effectively
gotten to the point where I might as well have no power
going through it (the load on it is in fact so much that
without power I can't hear a thing, and if I could it would
be so distorted it could break speakers!)

everything is stereo right up until the point that it
reaches my mixer, I used plugs to combine both stereo
channels into the one mono channel (so that I don't just get
the left side and miss out on the sounds coming from the
right side)

so if I want to record something at full stereo, full power
(no impedance problems and therefore quality loss) I simply
unplug the channel fropm my mixer, and plug it into the Rec.
input on my computer, or my headphones

(stereo isn't important to me when listening to speakers,
but it is if I'm listening on headphones because i can
really tell the difference)

the tape recorder serves it's purpose only to record the
radio in mono, (it took some tricky cord manipulation and
pluf use to get both channels working, the tape player
itself is designed to record in stereo) when I need to
record I simply plug it into the Main record/Aux Stereo and
fire away

I could also record me singing or scracthing over the top if
I wanted to

(of course I could record all of this directly onto my
computer anyway with far less quality loss, but tape is
better for some things and i'm not an audiophile so the
sound quality does bother me *that* much)

I can also tape tapes playing on the main record/aux stereo,
which I will use to make copies of the oxygenfad mix tape to
distribute with future killbot records releases as an extra
(or so it is planned ^^)

anybody that uses a car tape deck can expect a mix tape from
me if so requested,

the only record player that I don't have plugged in (it's
powered, but the sound isn't plugged in) has a brush cleaner
thingy that sits over the record and cleans it as it plays,
I use it to clean my record before i play them (it only
takes about a minute and does it all autmoatically)

"how on earth does all of this work when the only 'line in'
used is going directly to the stereo with the speakers
itself"
you ask?

Basically I balance the volume so that it is the loudest
coming from the output and quetest at the source, this way i
never actually reach the cutoff and it's well and truly at
full volume by the time it reaches the output, this picture
explains a lot better than I can

I spent only $120 total on audio gear and I have an
effective 'studio' that can do just about anything, (
despite having to work with broken/shit gear)

the diagrams make the whole thing make sense

I was just really bored

okay so you wanted to make a studio

ive seen that schematic

you should use a lot of cheap radios as input and twiddle
the knobs, its awesome

all goes well), i don't even know if i'll be able to connect
this stuff right...

come on thats the easiest thing ever :) just make sure you
always connect the same wires on your amp/speakers. like
connect the red to the red of the left speaker. ah well
everyone else can help you if it fails

it's failry self explanatory, unless you're missing cables
of course

and it doesn't even matter if you mix up white with red, it
just won't be playing the sound on the right sides

congratulations !
i broke my tweeters so for now i'm using lighter speakers
plugged in the rec output from mmy mixer, filterd just
enough to leave the bass to the big ones, each pair with his
own amp, i never heard so many phase problems and a so wrong
stereo image but it's fun to hear wathever sound is coming
from the speaker, moving around and being modulated to death
by this highly un-effective monitoring system, it can even
lure you into thinking you have a revrb unit on your
synth....

do you think maybe that the rec output has a longer delay
than the normal output?
