usb midi keyboards

i want to get a cheapish keyboard for making music with my
laptop using cubase or something similar.

so it seems what i'm after is a usb midi keyboard right?

what i want to know is, can many of them be played as a
stand alone keyboard, or do they always need a computer to
hear something.

the main reason i want it, is to put notes into a computer,
but it would also be nice to be able to just plug it in to a
power point and have a play, don't really care about it
having many in built samples, even just a single piano
sample would be fine.

it would just be annoying if its totally useless without a
computer though.

do i need to spend a lot to be able to hear stuff without a
computer?

The keyboards you describe are always just for sending midi
data to a computer. If you want something that makes sounds
by itself you'll need to get a synth. Them's the breaks.

you need a small casio with one mini jack out put!

you also need some alba or sanyo hifi speakers!

make a microphone from two plastic cups and a length of
string!

make a guitar from a shoebox and some elastic bands

get a commodore 64 or try and get the music making package
for the c64 known as music maker!

another way of storing your audio is to sing into a cave
entrance and wait for the echo!!!!!

if all of these dont help make like another shmick and get
cracked copies of shitty preset packages like fruty loohps
or reason!!!!!!

word to the mummy fucker!!

you can get a midi keyboard then buy a sound module (think
it's called that) that you plug in along with extra power or
batteries so that you can you can play the keyboard without
a computer, but you need to plug a couple of speakers in
too.

i wouldnt go for an ultra cheap one.. theres quite an
difference on the feel of playing it, you dont want a mini
crap cheap version that hasnt got sensitive keys..
and when using with computer it's really fun to have some
knobs and sliders to play around with too.

good day

I'm in the same boat I think... my research has led me to
believe you can buy a little box that converts midi to usb.
Then I can just use my yamaha keyboard for sequencing. No
twiddly nobs on it though. I think eventually I'll by that
cheap Oxygen(is it?) midi controller thingy.

ok, so i think i've found what i'm going to buy, now before
i buy it im just wondering about the cpu requirements of
using softsynths.

ill be using a 800mhz laptop which is a couple of years old
now. the hdd speed isn't great so i'm wondering if its going
to be able to handle using softsynths.

i know they vary a lot in their requirements, but does
anyone have any idea how my laptop would go with using midi
softsynths, will there be much latency? i'm hoping for none.

800mhz is OK but you wont be able to use loads of soft
synths at the same time and yeah, it's from synth to synth.

the latency depends on what drivers and souncard you use,
all better soundcard should have very low latency but more
basic soundcards are pretty sucky when it comes to that.

good luck

yeah i've been looking at the m-audio and evolution ones.

from what i can see they're pretty much the same but the
evolution ones cost a bit more, anybody know the difference?
