the musical aging process

poll: whose early albums and singles do you think are the
most interesting now?
-aphex twin/caustic window/polygon window
-squarepusher/chaos ad
-boc
-autechre
-mu-ziq
-(other)

who made the largest body of early material that is still
compelling today?

The way I see it, there are two groups in the music
industry. There are groups that make music (or wonderful
noise in ATs case hehe) and there are bands.

Bands are *NSYNC, New Kids, 80's hair bands, etc. Basically
they are tools of the industry to extract money from kids
pockets.

Groups that put out music though, music that they believe
in, and that they are making because they love music, touch
everyone a certain way. Maybe it's some obscure band from
the 60s, maybe a punk band from the 90s, but I think any
group that makes music for their love of music, and we as
listeners beleive in too, stands the test of time in it's
own way. Some may be glad a group is gone (see the Smashing
Pumpkins post), but some may have been touched by that
group. As long as the albums that were produced with the
best intentions and for the best reasons are still around,
there will always be people who will cherish those sounds
from those eras. True music, to each person in their own
way, is timeless.

yes. but what do people find is the most interesting to
listen to? a lot of people cite SAW 85-92 and early ae and
squarepusher albums as being great, but some electronic
music from that time sounds really dated. such is the
criticism often for polygon/caustic window releases.

bump, cos this should've been an interesting thread

You're wrong.

Actually, 'group' is the word to describe manufactured pop
groups, since they don't play instruments so they can't be
considered a 'band'.
'band' is the word to describe a group who play instruments,
whether they record it or not. Or even whether it's any good
or not.
'artists' (in the musical sense) is used to describe someone
who expresses themselves by music. That can mean someone in
a band, or someone who is solo. Whether that term applies to
a manufactured popstar is debatable.

well...i kinda like all those artists' early stuff..
i really like squarepusher's burningn n tree/spymania era
stuff...though i mostly prefer that to his chaos ad stuff
(aside from psultan..that ones a classic)
i like aphex's saw85-92, polygon and caustic window
stuff...though im not so into the classics/ab3 type stuff..
the only stuff from µ-ziq's past im not crazy about is in
pine effect
and as for ae...i like incunabula as much as (probably more
than) confield..
i really like the old boc stuff i've heard...i almost think
i like twoism better than mhtrtc..

i think its hard for music that was ahead of its time when
it came out to really become dated...its not like comparing
pablo honey to amnesiac...
though saw85-92 and surfing on sine waves are not nearly as
innovative as the rdj album is...i think they are still
ahead of ..or at least equal to most of the more
straightforward/conventional contemporary dance music of the
present..

Champoné, I admit I was thinking in different terms than
you, but your explanation makes sense. I would thusly
switch the terms in my above post, with the comments there
within still intact.

Thanks for a better definition.

I would have to go with Autechre

I mean....cmon, anyone who could grow and mold into
composing a Masterpiece to surpass time such as
Confield....

They get my vote
