Slightly embarassingly self indulgent at times? Sure. But
when its workin' it's a virtual handjob. Good album. Bad
Person: me. Drunk: yes. Hiccuping: Yes. Idiot?: Yes

I am a bad drunkard idiot who is hiccuping.
Havent posted here since they rezzed the JC. So Instead I
will... nope.. come to think of it I wont do anything.

I would like it more if he produced as well as he produced
D.Y.K.S and GoPlastic. It's got great ideas, but there's
somethin wrong with the overall "sound" and I can't place
what it is.

Poor mastering, bad mixing.

Some neat tunes, though.

poor production put it off initially for me, too.

I know what you are saying about the sound. It's kinda one
demensional. Even though his sound is rooted in layering
many different events. I love his stuff. My second favorite,
but yes, bad mixing job or something.

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2004-08-22 03:04 [#01311319]

Maybe it's cause his drum sounds are acoustic kits. They
don't get as pronounced as say the pounding percussion in
drukqs. He also doesn't do much thick synthy stuff either,
lately. Mostly thick reverb which can make things flat.

poor mastering...???!?
poor mixing...??!??

i think the overall sound is what he(they) wanted, yes you
have to turn it up more than all the other overcompressed
album that are so loud your hearsd are bored after 20
minutes

i find the sound on ultravisitor very fresh and mastered,
there is headroom for the sound effects to rip tru your
bones
there is a lot of it that sound so empty yet powerfull, like
toward the end of 50 cycles

what you find poor mixing/mastering is to me creative
mixing/mastering for once...

end of rant

ps: i don't like half the tunes on it but you can't say it's
badly produced

Tom knows what he's doing with sound on his albums. Maybe
he's not as interested at the over-produced latest dolby
aucoustics as a lot of other electronic haeads. He's a
bloody musical genious and yous knows its!!!!

He got slated a lot for the DYKS "Alive in Japan" CD. Never
understood what the problem was here. Its fanrastic! A live
treat from the place Tom most likes to play.

I think the production sounds fucking awesome. it's the
highlight of the album for me, I think everyone is confusing
multiple organic sounding layers for mess wishy washy
editing,

iambic 9 poetry is my favorite melody on the album. Maybe my
favorite track despite the lack of bells and whistles.

reverbs can make things sound wishy washy. Pros only like to
put it on things in the peripheral sounds. Not things you
want up close. So. Sp doesn't care about those conventions.

"what you find poor mixing/mastering is to me creative
mixing/mastering for once..."

God, I knew someone would say this. I enjoy creative and
interesting production tricks. Arab On Radar, early Ruins,
Nick Forte, This Heat, etc. Their stuff sounds really rough
and that's part of the reason why I like it. Even RDJ Album
sounds pretty rustic and nasty in places. I think it's good.
I just don't like it on this album.

"Tom knows what he's doing with sound on his albums.

I don't think he's a musical genius. I do think he's very
good at what he does, though.

the parts that matter are really clean and crisp though, the
bass parts of the tracsk have been mastered f**king
brilliantly, nice and clear, the beats and synth pads are
the only parts that sound like they could have been recorded
on a $20 mixer and a tape deck, but the details in the chaos
is still really really sharp and crunchy, which leads me to
beleive that he has done it for effect,

I don't tihnk it's mastered badly, so much as meant to sound
that way, freeform does a similar thing, and I surely don't
think that he master his albums badly..

its the live sound to the album that makes it work i think.
Too many albums these days sound far too pollished.
Ultravisitor works because it sounds more raw in my opinion.

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2004-08-24 08:08 [#01312970]

i sort of get the "district 2 sounds like Go Plastic" idea
but i don't think its a really sound one. First off i love
that tune, probably my absolute fave on the album but its
structurelly very different from the GP heavies. I can't
even imagine mixing it that well with a GP track cos the
sound layers are very different - the drums being more in
then background.

GP jungle songs are very up front and obvious with a
definite "catch" or 2.. a melody, or jungle meltdown
sequence or something... where i think Districtline 2 has a
ghostly distant quality all on its own.

If i had to compare D2 to another >[] track it would be with
"my fucking sound" as they both have an unearthly abstract
feeling that attacks you from an obtuse angle..... and
tickles your spine....love em!

i'm not saying that d2 sounds as if it was on gp, it still
sounds like a ultravis track, but, its of the same style.
