if I can't get into windows on my laptop because of some
dll thing "possibly" being corrupt, and the best thing for
me to do would be to reinstall windows, does that mean that
everything gets formatted on the windows drive? or can you
reinstall an os without getting rid of everything on your
drive?

normally not as far as I know, but I heard it many times b4
that ppl lost all their stuff, so I recommend you to backup
everything you want to keep

yeah, theres really not much you can do about it.. the dll
files are generated for each installation so you cant get em
from other computers

and, new installations format (delete) your harddrive

too bad

broken

you could've if you had made several partitions, saving one
partition for windows and other programs, and keeping all
your files on another partition.

then, later on, you can reinstall windows to the
windows-partition and if everything works normally, the
other partition will stay unharmed.

Best not to rely on Windows to respect partitions on a
reinstall. Best to have seperate physical disks for data and
software/os.

if you are going to do a clean install remember to delete
the partition then re-create it just in case you have a boot
sector virus

it is possible to re install windows without formating..
depends on what kind windows installation disc you have. try
runnind the instalation and it may ask you if you want a
clean install or just a re-install

eh.. certain windows-installations won't format your hd..
you can chose "repair," and it just re-installs windows..
however, your system register will be fucked, so you can't
run any programs that were already installed.. you have to
re-install them...

theo: You can reinstall without reformatting. It should
give you the option. You will need to reinstall any
programs, like MS Office etc. But your data will be ok.
(But then you did a backup anyway, right? ;-)

yeah, but it's not 100%

It depends on which windows-release you have... i'd suggest
backup first anyway, and then you could try...

offline theo himself from +- on 2004-08-16 06:37 [#01306051]

well how can I backup if I can't even get into windows??

ehm... eh.. xcopy? maybe...

I don't know... you should just try.. if it doesn't work it
doesn't work and then there's nothing you can do about it...

dosent xp have a repair option before it formats the hard
drive?!

And I'm sure there's an option to reinstall windowns without
formatting, just an over the top job like, but don't know if
that'll work

I'm not even sure if I'm right or not =o\
