My band, MP3s!

Recently started a band with two other people, doing no
particular style of music. This isn't electronic as such,
although we do use an electronic drumkit and keyboard :D
So, tell me what you think, enjoy. The MP3s are very small.
'Hold Your Breath' here is the most complete song, but
xltronic people might prefer the other two. We have a few
more songs I haven't recorded yet, including a cover of
Squarepusher - Iambic 5 Poetry, which is great with live
bass.

Piano one

Hold your breath

Reggae one

eeergh, Hold your breath wasnt my my cup of tea at all =/ i
cant stand that type of music, i cant even tell you if it's
bad or good or anything like that.

but i can tell you that i really enjoyed the piano track, i
like it, it's siply a nice piano track with some nice
background moaning like singing. The drums are totally ok,
they dont need to be any different exept for some more
cymbals maybe.. lift the rides out in stereo a bit more or
something.
I guess i could complain some on the mixing =) but i wont
now, i suggest you upload higher or high! quality mp3 next
time you spam your tracks somewhere.

good day

Haha no problem :) Didn't think that one would go down well
at all. Glad you liked the piano one, I wrote that one. Yeah
I'm the drummer, the bassist/vocalist was playing drums in
that song, and he doesn't usually. Yeah it could do with
some more cymbals, tweaking of ride.
Mixing! It's so difficult! And don't get me started on
compression, that's impossible to get right! I should look
for tutorials or something..
Thanks for the criticism.

no problem, at least the piano track should be really easy
to mix.. but it all depends on the source recording (or what
it's called) pretty much, a clean recording helps the mix
and the possibilitys for mixing the track gets better and
everything gets easy when the recordings are good from the
begining.

compression isnt impossible at all, it's just a matter of
hearing, i can agree thou that it can be hard to "know" what
amount of compression you need, it's easyer to "hear" what
amount of compression you need, if you understand what im
saying.
Keep im mind that compression wont save the sound in anyway
(many people seem to think that these days) compression is
just great when you wanna clear the odness of a sound, it
presses the sound together so that the frequences get's
"smaller" and more tighten up.. o crap i cant explain this
heh..
anyway be carefull when using compressor so that you dont
kill the sounds range, it gets really boring to listen to
heavy compressed music imo.

good luck

Right now we're using a 6 channel mixer, recording onto a G4
powerbook. The quality is very high, but it has lost it
completely in those MP3s. Yeah I try not to use too much
compression, have had some awful recordings with too much.
It's hard to describe the effect with compression...it
sounds, thick, flat, sort of.

On "Hold Your Breath," the electronic drums sound really
cheesy and they totally ruin the song for me. Plus the
drummer seems a little off at times (the fills around
~1:40). I think if you started using a real drum set and
put a bit more energy into the performance it could have
something...

The piano track is similar for me, has potential but needs
work.

Thanks for sharing

You don't like the actual sound of them? Well, fair enough I
suppose, I guess if you're used to this kind of music with
acoustic drumkits then it wouldn't sound so good. But I love
my midi kit, I'll never go back to acoustic. Although I
think I'll tweak that setup a bit, give it more of an
acoustic sound to work better with the other instruments.
Drums at 1:40 are on thirds but on-time, which I suppose is
off-time to what you'd expect, fourths or something. But,
yeah, I'll admit I'm not a perfect drummer, at times I do
get a little bit off. Practise makes perfect :)
thanks for listening

Well at least you're being honest.
