Most complex track?

offline Torley Wong on 2004-08-06 18:54 [#01297574]
Points: 235 Status: Lurker

What is, in your view, the most technically advanced and
downright complex track you know?

Obviously this manifests itself in different ways, but I am
curious to hear some opinions because there is a parallel
thread to this at TranceAddict and I *know* I'm missing out
a lot of the IDM/Braindance and the like possibilities.
Hence why I have decided to ask. Qualifications are
inevitably subjective but can include such accomplishments
as time-consuming micro-editing and mini-sequencing, or
acute usage of microtonal scaling or DSP automation.
Obviously tracks from the big names can come to mind, but if
there's something more obscure that you'd like to dig up
which is hyper-insane in its complexity, feel free to do
this too. An artist name, track name, and an explanation
will do. Thank you graciously and personal bias is fine.

So, what's your most complex track? :D

Beethoven??? Why have you chosen this particular selection?
And as for electronic works, what would you pick? :)

if you want to confine this to electronic music, probably
something off lp5 or drukqs, or maybe something by
xanopticon or something.

define 'complex'.

complaining about autechre - being too dumb to actually
understand any music above the level of Steps and therefore
complaining about music that does evolve beyond that point.

for example: "Pete is complaining about autechre
again, but well - he IS as thick as pig-shit, you know."

AHHH! There we go, qrter, now we're getting the personal
bias I value into here. So, who's your nod for?

I'm serious folks. If you have an opinion that counts for
complexity, weigh it here. Whether it be Squarepusher's
"Tetra-Sync" (my personal fave) or Aphex's "54 Cymru Beats"
or any of the Autechre tracks whose names I cannot
pronounce, much less spell... kidding on that last tip.

:)

slagging off autechre is so much fun, it brings out all the
anally retentiveness really touchy about such god awful
pretentious bollocks that no other slagging off of anyone
else can do, usually followed by several comments of "you
don't understand" coupled with fierce putdowns and general
personal attacks.

tubular bells is arguably the finest conglomeration of
off-centered instruments concerted together to form a single
unique piece. A variety of instruments are combined to
create an excitable multitude of rhythms, tones, pitches,
and harmonies that all fuse neatly into each other,
resulting in an astounding plethora of music

then ofcourse followed by responses by the supposedly aloof
off-slaggers saying how it all was meant to wind up people
in the first place, thereby pretty much proving that this
aloofness was just a pretty transparent ruse to scratch away
some of the boredom in their empty lives and thereby proving
that they're pretty sad anyway to need that.

that point proven even more strongly by their devotion to
the vapid work of Mike Oldfield, a man known for
single-handedly trying to murder all music by his scary
keyboard-meanderings!

I agree, KainiIndustries.

I'm serious.

Is that Mike Oldfield growling? The melodies are wikkid.

One thing I seriously love and admire about Tubular Bells is
like how all those diverse styles of music are melded into
one beautiful, harmonious tapestry. I like Tubular Bells II
for its "alternate reality" take on all the themes, and I've
heard the Symphonic and latest update recreation too. I
don't care too much for Oldfield's own trancey remix of the
Bells theme on TB3 however... come to think of it, TB3 was
kinda like TB303. LOL.

it regardless.

This was, and is I suppose, perhaps the main criterion by
which I judged music's (and other art) aesthetic value, too.
I've spent a long time searching for such things then so
here are the albums that are most extreme in this nature:

otto von schirach : 8000 bc (+ other albums)
autechre: lp5 (+ other albums)
crunch: 1
richard devine: lipswitch
michael fakesch: marion (especially 2nd to last track)
phluidbox: various rare tracks like event cube
danny (previously mp3.com/dannn): various schematicish
tracks
chulk: album "pre-". Hard to find. He was or is on tefosav.

You might want to hear music I made such as "telefon tel
teleshmix 2" at soundclick.com (under name "w M w"... or
"wmw" I forget.)

rachmaninoff out of the top of my head has probably made one
of the most complex music i've ever heard and thats simply
because he's one of the few classical artists i really
listen to and know. then theres my brothers insanely large
collection of classical music. some songs there span about
16 min's long and it really doesn't have any actul
attainable theoretical structure. so that i feel in itself
is complex. you have to have a good ear for it and
understand its ecnompassing beauty. i've heard some
orchestrated music in the radio by usually countries like
sweden, denmark, finland, holland, belgium, germany, etc...
that have made such beautiful music and i never bother to
write down who its from because i'm usually on the road
driving and i can't stop what i'm doing. if its complexity
you want i'd definitely go with european classical music.
excuse my writing i was typing fast! :)

you can get attention in better, more productive ways than
making fun of other people's music. if you know that people
really take this music seriously then why slag off on it.

well, complexity is a hard term to really unilaterally
define in electronic music... it depends on how you look at
it.

that said, i'll go with autechre's draft 7.30... i dont know
any specific track names other than suppiere(sp?), but that
album is wonderfully technical and complex. autechre has
beaten you: its damn near impossible to pick out every
single sound and trace it to its origin.

the beats are on some other ish, and htey cant be arsed to
align in a static pattern: fully dynamic.

so i cant say that i especially like it a whole ton, but i
will give autechre props for making a very complex/technical
LP in draft 7.30 by giving it some love in this thread.

autechre: cap.iV.

and, with no doubt the most complex piece of music ever
created: the art of the fugue by j.s. bach. everyone who
ever got in touch with this monstrous musical vision (and
its concept) will agree instantly.

richard devine - aleamapper, lipswitch
autechre - confield

actually i find confield more complex than draft, maybe
'cause it's one of my all-time favs and i've been listening
to it so many times. and draft imo is more about randomness
than complexity
