What is your opinion / experiences on moshpits?
I think they're quite scary. But they're also exciting.
I've never been near one so I have no idea what I'd do in
one.

When I was younger, my older brother was always in punk rock
bands (and still is thoughtriot.com), so I'd go to shows a
lot. I was never very partial to them. I love dancing, but
some guys just like to bring the pain; those big, fat,
sweaty kids who like to impress people by punching them in
the nose. So I would try my luck in those moshpits, but then
I kind of grew out of it.

im always in them
they're great and friendly
my jaw still hurts from 13 days back though when an mosh
unexperienced friend of mine threw me against the elbow of
the mosh bear of this particular moshpit. generally people
know what they're doing though and it's conciderently
pushing each other and manly hugs and cool fist greetings
after. the people around it seem to less understand and
tolerate it these days though. get the fuck out if you dont
want someone flying against you.

i was at this festival a few years back (werchter, belgium)
and muse was playing and all these nice kids were moshing
and jumping and stuff but in front of the stage was this
woman who didnt quite get it. she was going bezerk. i
eventually twisted her arm when she started throwing her
elbows around to try to knock down kids. after which i
feared she would beat me up. damned bith

I prefer to dance. And I'm scared of having my face pounded
or my ribs cracked. Although I have to admit I started a
moshpit a few times. I prefer the more 'friendly' mosh pits
that just involve pushing. Those are fun.

those "friendly moshpits" where people push each other are
called slam-dancing. it's from old school punk rock and is
AWESOME. you won't have more fun at a concert than that. i
am a staunch supporter of slam-dancing.

moshing is something heavy metal fans invented in the
late-80's because they are bullied at high school and feel
the urge to make a big punching/kicking circle where they
pretend to be sumo wrestlers on speed and assert the
repressed jock within.

the hitting generally isnt full impact really
exept with hardcore, that is insane, animals they are
all metal 'pits' are filled with 16 year old boys these
days, looking for their glasses or lenses, aww

friendly pits are fun, even though im getting older now,
almost 30, so i take it a bit easier

but hard pits are for beefcakes/retarded "tough guys"/losers

I have not been in a mosh pit since the Butthole Surfers
shows of the early 90's.

Didnt know they still existed...

completely mindless, but fun nonetheless.

i used to love it, but haven't been been in a proper mosh
for about 2 years. i used to judge how decent the pit was
by how many bruises i had the next morning :s. my steel
toe-cap doc martins used to do the job quite nicely :) used
to get a lot of respect from the men too, as there were very
few women that could give as good as they got. i preferred
it heavy, but only if the crowd was considerate - it's
really good to know that if you fall or get pushed to the
ground people will help you up and not just trample on your
head :s
circle pits were a personal favourite - lethal but so much
fun.

nedless to say, i've calmed down a little :p

I haven't seen hide nor hair of the Surfers in years.
Excellent live show and decent pit. Last show I saw they
had 2 film projectors set up and one had a
penis-reconstruction video (guy somehow got his wang stuck
in a combine) with blunt cuts to this hot naked chick
rolling around with a pillow and the other screen had an
episode of charlie's angels playing upside down, backwards
and in negative. I drank 12 oz of robitussin DM cough
medicine and had a smashing time. Still have the concert
t-shirt too- replete with pic of 2 headed baby.

it totally depends on the environment and audience, i find.
when you're in a friendly audience, where people look out
for each other, pick each other up and are generally not
taking it seriously, its a blast! when its hardcore kids
who have some fucked up idea about hurting people or have no
idea of what they're doing, it sux and i generally just sit
out.

its funny - i started highshool in 1991, and i think that
was a special time for moshing. when grunge got all that
hype, it was instantly moshing at every show i went to. i
saw mudhoney that year and it was absurd and fun. in a way
though "moshing" actually became the normal way of dancing
and having fun for alot of my peers. so even today folks
will break into the mosh at jungle or breakcore shows
here...but its all in fun, and mixed with alot of other ways
of getting down.

Mosh pits where fun but a really good crowd surf was the
shit tho. I was up like a minute or something at a Suicidal
Tendencies gig once , it was crazy , i ended up so far away
it took me about 15 minutes to find my friends again haha!

hurt while listening to music. BOOOOO

i have a friend who was at a muse gig, and she got punched
hard in the belly by another girl for no reason - she
fainted, and had to be taken out to the infirmary... when
she came back to life a few minutes later, she went back to
the concert though...

she lost stuff in this gig too (a coat and something else, i
don't remember what). but she says she enjoyed the gig in
spite of that.

i don't know, i'm a bit worried = /
i've never been to a gig, i'm going in a few days...

that's awful. it's ridiculous that people hurt each other
at concerts - i've seen/heard about my share of horror
stories.

what concert are you attending?

as much as i love live music, its usually the people
watching that affect the mood. i've been to lots of heavy
metal shows...sepultura, prong, pantera, slayer, morbid
angel, prophecy, living sacrifice, hatebreed, meshuggah,
etc.

i've been in some pits. dancing in circles is fun... having
to worry about the 300 pound, bald, nazi with chains wrapped
around his fists.. is not fun.

about moshpits. its a fun way to get into the music, but
like everything else in the world... people ruin it.
