gang gang dance

this band deserves a topic on its own. i found out about
them through the recommendation from deadeight.
it's the most exciting music i've heard in a long
time...definitely the most exciting this year. i've
downloaded both albums and i love them both. the one titled
"gang gang dance" are two tracks (side a and b), both about
20 minutes long.

here's a review deadeight posted in the original thread:

Gang Gang Dance review in the Wire:

"The art-rock underground in Brooklyn is always
percolating,
but lately there's something scalding in the water,
considering the brilliantly disparate sounds of Sightings,
Animal Collective, Double Leopards, Excepter, Mouthus, all
the outsider outfits on the Space is No Place compilations,
and so much more. Gang Gang Dance just might be the tip of
this sky-high geyser; this LP, their first official release
(aside from last years super-limited Revival of the
Shittest
CD-R), is an absolute mind-washer, two side-long tracks of
elongated vocals, 3-D percussion, electronic breakdowns,
and
skin-raising noise. ..no one could've predicted the bracing
originality of their new ensemble." - Marc Masters, WIRE.

check them out, you won't be sorry.

or others on the board.

I've heard of them through their association with the
Brooklyn noise scene (Animal Collective are the fucking shit
- especially "Here Comes the Indian", because that album
fucking rules) but I can't find a record shop that carries
their stuff. How are they compared to the Collective?

well, it's quite different actually. much more
minimalistic...and doesn't have that happy animal collective
vibe.

animal collective is nice, but i love this gang gang dance
way more. mind it's totally different stuff though.

"Taking the building blocks of dance, rock and expiermental
music this foursome whip up as strange and beautiful a music
as we've ever heard, bringing to mind Throbbing Grissle or
Amon Duul or, to be more specific, a sound unlike we've ever
heard before."

that's from their bio - i think that's a fairly apt
description. "revival of the shittest" lp is quite good,
but that's all i've heard.

you should get "gang gang dance"...i like it a bit more "to
revival...", some parts remind me of melvins/fantomas quite
a bit...a mixture of that heavy melvins sound (appart from
vocals) and delirium cordia. awesome.

I still want to get one of their albums. I'm going to see
Animal Collective in Brooklyn when I go to NYC next week -
maybe GGD will play a show while I'm in town. Have you been
listening to Arcade Fire's "Funeral"? I love love love am
passionately in LOVE with that record.

well, i haven't listened to arcade fire in quite a while
actually..i have this weird thing going on that i kind of
put aside every album after a few listens..and then, like it
was the case with ggd, i check it out after a while again
:)

you should be in new york on march 18th though :)

check

I hate to say it, but I'm not familiar with any of those
groups. However, that does look really interesting. This
will be my first time in New York, so I'm really looking
forward to all of the art museums and shows. As far as the
Arcade Fire album is concerned, I didn't care for it the
first five times I listened to it. Only once I put on my
headphones and went out for a walk did I "really" hear it
for the first time. That album is gets better and better
with each listen for me (similar to how Autechre albums
operate on my nervous-system).

ok, I picked up a Gang gang Dance album in Greenwich
Village when I was in Manhattan a few days ago. I've only
listened to it twice so far, but my second listening was
better than the first - always a good sign.

Very cool. Obviously a bit in the same general style as
"Here Comes the Indian" Animal Collective and Black Dice's
"Beaches and Cayons" etc. but with their own unique twist
which distinguishes them. I love this type of shit, so I
knew I would like it. I still need some time to familiarize
myself with this album, so it remains to be seen if I will
go from merely enjoying it to loving it. I also got Animal
Collective's "Campfire Songs" at the same time, so I have
been splitting my time between those records and all of the
other ones in my current playlist (Blueberry Boat, Funeral,
Meat is Murder).

yes, i suppose it can't take a few more listens..a friend of
mine didn't think too much of it at first, but after i
forced it a bit and was telling her how great i thought it
was she finally burnt a copy and after that even made a
radio show about them..i liked it instantly though :)

Oh, well i don't mean to come off like I'm not
enthusiastic about it, but two times is not alot for me
regarding exposure to an album. The first two times I
listened to Blueberry Boat I thought it was "interesting",
but after my third time I was hopelessly addicted to it and
listening to the record (all 80 minutes worth) twice a day
religiously. I will say this though, I was up and dancing
the second time through with track #2 :).
