The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath.

I finally bought this on Friday, after putting it off for
some years, and after a few people spoke about her
independently of one another, thus leading myself to decide
that it was time to buy and read it.

It is great, and anyone who's heard of it but thought not to
read it, I urge you to reconsider. Those of you who have
never heard of author or novel, I urge you to read The Bell
Jar.

Plath committed suicide the year it was published. She was
aged 30.

If only you'd emulate her mode of death.

that's exactly one of those titles that I keep putting of
buying and reading.. I just bought a boxed set of "essential
poetry" according to Faber & Faber and one of them is
Plath's "Ariel", so I was just thinking about "The Bell
Jar".

I did not realise that it was a sacrificial killing.

actually i was going for the death by fire thing, but i
guess she just gassed herself, not burned herself or
anything.

Immolation is a sacrifical killing. I think maybe because
that monk on the cover of the RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
immolated himself by setting himself ablaze, many people
thought THAT was the immolation?

it can mean to kill yourself by fire and to kill yourself as
a sacrifice.

immolation is a sacrificial killing howeverr it's most
commonly associated with the act of being burrned as the
method of death within the sacrrifice. still a sacrificial
killing, howeverr. immolation is not being burrned alive in
a house firre.

merriam webster disagrees with you.

Main Entry: im·mo·late
Pronunciation: 'i-m&-"lAt
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -lat·ed; -lat·ing
Etymology: Latin immolatus, past participle of immolare,
from in- + mola spelt grits; from the custom of sprinkling
victims with sacrificial meal; akin to Latin molere to grind
-- more at MEAL
1 : to offer in sacrifice; especially : to kill as a
sacrificial victim
2 : to kill or destroy often by fire

I looked it up in the Oxford English Dictionary, and it says
thus: "kill or offer as a sacrifice". It has no mention of
burning. Webster is the US dictionary is it not? Personally,
I would rate the OED above Webster, but that is just me.

Wasn't Sylvia Plath married to the Poet Laureat (spelling?)
at the time? He was cheating on her and that's why she
killed herself or something.

God, I sound like a right moron.

I'm trying to read Jacques Derrida's OF GRAMMATOLOGY at the
moment. THAT makes me feel very stupid.
:/

She was married to poet Ted Hughes. I think she killed
herself because she was crazy.

Regardless of the Yankee acquired mis-definition of
"immolation", she gassed herself, she didn't burn herself
(according to my sources).
