Ok so I've got zdoom, and doom2.wad... and I've downloaded a custom wad... How do I tell it which wad to use? I'm not sure what wad its using now, but the levels are all different, the monsters have new graphics as do the guns... so maybe it was using the HR.Wad that I downloaded? except that I removed it from that folder and it was still the same game... what am I missing here?

hmm... first of all have you ever played doom TWO? Maybe you're familiar with doom ONE and thus the levels seem new to you. But to play a wad like hell revealed (hr.wad), copy and paste it into zdoom.exe. If you do that correctly, the title screen of the game should say "hell revealed".

Also, if I remember, it is necessary to have the IWAD (doom2.wad) in the SAME folder as zdoom. then just copy and paste, or click and drag hr.wad into zdoom. If that doesn't work, let me know. Oh, when the game starts go to the first level. If there's a warp right behind you, that's hell revealed. If you're on an upper platform with a chainsaw in the back, that's doom2.
If the graphics are really fucked up looking you might be using heretic.wad by accident?

el oh el, of course I've played doom2 :) Yeah, whatever wad it was using was totally different than doom1 and doom 2... it was pretty low quality, definately user created. So I copy and paste one file into an .exe from windows explorer? or do I do this in game some how? There is no front-end for me... when I double click the zdoom.exe, it automatically loads whatever .wad it is that it's been loading.

ok well you were right, the copying and pasting worked... except the guns are still the same as is all the enemy graphics.... I think the doom2.wad that I have (which I got from kazaa) might actually be the culprit... it's probably a doom2.wad that someone totally tweaked and then released on the internet... oh well, it's bearable I suppose.... except that it keeps making that system beep constantly throughout the game... it's pretty trying on my patience.

I'm not that good with this stuff myself. It's a miracle I got it to work. But don't double click zdoom, just drag hr.wad onto it like I said (in the windows folder, not during gameplay) and see what happens.

hit escape and go to ... videomode I think, then select a higher resolution. That beeping shit used to happen to me but now doesn't I think because I changed keyboards. type idclev13, or god forbit 24, to go to a hard level (the first levels of hr are somewhat normal).

Maybe toy with the sound/video options etc. and the beeping will stop?

I've got the resolution at 1024x768 already... any higher and the words will be hard to read...
but yeah, I think my doom2.wad is actually a wad called FreeDoom... ever heard of it? its really pissing me off, because it's not even a finished total conversion... there are still some little floating boxes every so often that say "FreeDoom graphic not complete" or something like that in place of whatever was supposed to be there... damnit why did I delete doom95, I could have just gotten a wad file from that I think.

ha ha, um maybe I could share it on soulseek. I don't know how big it is or long it would take or if you have soulseek.

well the version I got was 6megs zipped, and yes I have soulseek... if you feel like sharing yours that is cool, if not don't worry about it. Afterall it's just doom.
By the way... do you by chance know anything about the EDGE or Legacy engine? apparently they are some kind of engine update for doom? maybe not but thats what I interpreted it to be in the 5 seconds I spent researching it.

Oh yeah doom2 is pretty big. That would take a long time, so let me know if you still want it and can't get it any other way. I've used legacy, but the general consensus is that zdoom is better, although legacy supposedly works better on linux. There are other more advanced source ports... I think prboom is one. I think it allows true 3d or something, never used it.
