I went to last years which was amazing, Coil headlined that
one and was the main reason for me going, they don't really
have any big names this year which is strange.

Pantalaimon... I remember you said you had just finished
college... does that when you went last year you were under
18? I'm slightly anxious as my friend and I really want to
go but are still 17. Was it strictly controlled?

i was 23, i started college late, it was a university course
at a college.

i don't think its that strict, if you look 18 i think you
would get in without any problems,

Oh right sorry :)

I seem to remember the central court of the Custard Factory
being pretty accessable, I imagine it would be easy to get
there if not into the bars etc. Well we'll wait and see, me
and my friend look reasonably old, I certainly think we look
old enough but hey.

Real party music.

Hehe all went well, very cool night :)

I'll try and talk about the guys I saw.

Esquilax were first on in the Medicine Bar, they were a tad
odd for me. A lot of feedback and guitar noise... improv
stuff. Kinda interesting but didn't hold my attention for
very long. I'm sure they would sound better on record.

Ward were the first act on the theatre space, there were
literally about 5 or 6 people watching their set. It was a
shame really as they were one of the most interesting acts
of the night. Like new Autechre, very interesting sitting
down and listening material. Sounded great throught the
PA... lots of strange and wonderful sounds.

Fast Lady were on first on the Main Stage... they were
pretty average. They were dressed in black masks and purple
robes, they looked like an evil Polyphonic Spree. A bit too
novelty for me I think.

Christ followed them on the Main Stage and I think that was
a bit unfortunate, he would have made a great contribution
further up the playlist. This guy worked with Boards of
Canada in the 90s and it showed, his aesthetics were very
similar. I think the crowd liked this one.

The Medicine Bar playlist got a bit fucked up here and I
don't know who was really playing. I think I ended up
watchin Team Shadetek without knowing it was them... whoever
it was they were very good, got the first dancers of the
evening. A lot of grime stuff which sounded awesome through
the sound system.

Frank Cougar played to a fuller theatre space than Ward. He
was monggggged, he reminded me of Chris Morris's dark side.
He basically pressed play on his CD
player/sequencer/whatever, and recited monologues over the
top. Very unnerving but funny in an odd way. Certainly the
most avant-garde act of the evening so far.

I caught only a couple of minutes of Dreams of Tall
Buildings; they seemed good, although I wasn't really into
that type of music. Two guitars doing post-rock kinda stuff.
Perhaps a bit too introverted for the kind of fest they were
playing (?).

offline clint from Silencio... (United Kingdom) on 2004-07-25 09:33 [#01285760]
Points: 3447 Status: Lurker

Caught a minute of Mike in Mono... he was perhaps a tad too
partyish for the sitting-down theatre space. The most
amusing thing about his set was the projection of a mulleted
80s Pat Sharpe presenting some program about the 'latest
synth technology'. Random.

Chris Clarke really tore up the Medicine Bar. He was my
favourite act of the night I think. Seemed to be having fun
on stage... the crowd loved him. Met him briefly after his
set aswel, very friendly guy.

PCM followed him with some darrrrrrrrk d&b stuff. Really
hard. They were cool but a bit too hardcore for me. I
enjoyed watching everyone go mental to them though :)

DJ Scud kicked ass, provided the 4 to the floor stuff and
kept everyone on their feet. Really f***ing loud stuff. He
was my second favourite of the night I think.

I caught a bit of Midaircondo in the Theatre Space. These
were an all female avant-garde type thing. I thought they
would be a bit of a novelty but they were very good...
Bjorkish kinda instrumentation but more improvised/jazzy
structure.

I didn't see many much of the Main Stage. My favourite act
on there was Panic DHH... probably the hardest metal I've
heard. Mentaaaaal... thrashy guitars etc but with bloody
hardcore electronics.

I caught tidbits of the other acts on there... Spektrum
looked lame but perhaps only because they were playing at
the same time as DJ Scud... anything would seem a bit tame
in comparison.

We left before the last guys unfortunately - didn't get to
see Senor Coconut :( We were knackerd after Scud! But yeah,
overall, totally diverse night. I think the Medicine Bar
acts were best personally but everyone seemed to entertain.
WOOO yea... well done Capsule for pulling it off :)

sounds good. i couldn't make saturday in the end.
did go on firday though, to see luke vibert & cylob. got
caught up talking to old friends outside the main room
itself.. none of us were drawn back to the dancefloor by
anything that sounded particularly wagon-christ-y.. so i'm
not 100% sure luke actually turned up. if he did, i must
have been totally engrossed in conversation!
you didn't happen to hear anything about this when you went

the festival per itself was really good, and the custard
factory is a perferct venue for these kind of events, the
weather was shite
and birmingham......ahhh......thats the biggest shithole on
planet earth...i will never ever EVER go there again, even
if my life is in danger...
full of rude frustrated uncivilized wankers, the whole city
is so frustrated that it drains life out of u...we spent 2
days there and didnt see one single person smiling...

that city ought to be completely burnt down!

i'm not from birmingham - but i've always liked it. most of
the city itself is pretty ugly (curse the architects who
rebuilt it after WWII), but in a sort of cosy, disarming
way.. there are MUCH uglier cities than brum.
to be honest, though birmingham certainly isn't the
friendliest city in the uk, i've always found brummies
friendlier than londoners.. by a long shot.
birmingham's kind of shit, but everyone there knows it - so
they don't carry the pretensions about how superior that the
vast majority of londoners i've met do.
although it's a shame that a shopping mall and chain-stores
seem to be the only way to breathe life into a city these
days, the redevelopment of the centre has done a lot for
birmingham. the custard factory community have (finally) got
their act together in the last couple of years. and brummies
finally seem to be making use of what they have at their
disposition.
so i think your judgements of the people and the place were
a little harsh. after all, i don't think i've ever seen
anyone smile in london either! let alone look up and catch
anyone's eye.
unfortunately, big cities seem to alienate people, despite
forcing them together.
but by and large i've always found brummies to be good
natured.
i don't want to offend, but perhaps what you saw was
isolated, or.. dare i say it.. a reaction to you?

aaaanyway, yeah, you're right.. i've seen sir real a few
times, and he's a good'un.

were you there on friday too?

offline weltact from Taiwan on 2004-07-27 10:36 [#01287706]

i was there both days
but last day me and my friend were kicked out of the
festival (!) for accidentally falling asleep in couch for
half an hour
the security guy came and kicked us out, eventho we begged
him for 15mins to let us stayt, and we were totally
straight, not drunk or drugged out, just tired, but the
wanker didnt listen at all, he behaved like a fuckin gorilla
with no brain or ears...idiot...
now how friendly is that...
i mean, im goin out in london allthetime, and nothing close
to this ever happened to me, bouncers r always civilized and
proffesional enough to behave the way its expected for that
position
and than,...on the way back...al the drunk bitches fighting
and shouting on the street, and blokes all looking to pick a
fight...whole city is so full of anger, i got the feeling
that if someone gave them guns they wld kill eachother off
completely in a week time

i donno, im a foreigner here aswell, but people r smiling at
me friendly on the streets, and im not goin to get stabbed
if i ask someone for directions on the street

my friend was english btw, from leeds, and he said that its
the rudest and most frustrated city hes seen in uk, and hes
definately not coming back either..

uh, i got goosebumps as i write this

offline acrid milk hall from United Kingdom on 2004-07-27 10:49 [#01287714]
Points: 2916 Status: Lurker

i can't explain the goosebumps.
but i am sorry you saw an ugly side to a city where (in all
the years i've gone there) i've NEVER had any trouble at
all.. the closest i've come was years ago in the
scummy/townie broad st area of the city centre. there's a
part like that in EVERY city in england, unfortunately.
nottingham's tiny in comparison with brum, but it's so much
worse for angry, drunk violent men (and women) swamping the
city centre at the weekend. i've seen that in london too.
and in sheffield, liverpool (where most people are really
friendly a lot of the time), newcastle, leeds, bristol,
oxford.. the list goes on.
even brighton, which is possibly the friendliest city in
england.
for some sad reason there's a lot of pent up anger
everywhere in the UK which unleashes itself at the weekend
when everyone's drunk. it's usually confined to certain
parts of town centres.
so, take my word for it, you got a false impression of brum.
it's a shame, as it's always sad when a night out is spoiled
by thuggish people. but they exist everywhere in the UK, not
just in birmingham.. and it's a case of luck & local
knowledge as to whether you run into them.
like i said - i've never really had trouble in brum' and
everyone i interacted with on friday; even the local dealer
was friendly. i wasn't interested in buying anything from
him, but i did stand on his toes, and then crashed a
cigarette from him.. i pointed a few people in his direction
to make it up to him.
i'm sorry too that you had a run in with a cunt-bouncer..
but believe me, there's a lot of them EVERYWHERE.

by the way, did you actually SEE luke vibert on friday? cos
i didn't! too busy catching up with old mates out in the
courtyard.

Man your attitude is so narrow minded... I can see you're
angry about the guard chucking you out but who's he, the
mayor??? He's hardly representative of the whole 1m
population.

I suppose you went all over Birmingham? Because some bits
are really nice. The Custard Factory end - Digbeth - is, as
a co-worker once told me, 'the arse of Birmingham'. It is
really shit round there. Hence why there's a scene growing
round there; it always the seedier places they grow from. I
agree the bars round there are shite, there are some
seriously shady spots and attract some seriously dodgy
types. But have you seen Brixton?? That's London, no? If
someone stayed in there and went out to Brixton in the
evenings I hardly think their opinion would be as glowing as
if they went all over.

Did you look around the Bull Ring? Or Cenenary Square? Or
the Mail Box? They are awesome. And if you want clubs with
more civilized bouncers, go to Broad Street. Extremely
vibrant clubbing district.

Brum is GOOD

offline weltact from Taiwan on 2004-07-27 13:06 [#01287851]

come on man
ive been around bullring, its the same shit, with more make
up
and broad street, just a big street with chain pubs and
stores, but still very small town minded, actually i stayed
there
dont know where mail box is tho

as for brixton, if u compare brum with brixton, i think
brixton is far more metropolitan and vibrant than the whole
city of brum, brixton is dirty, and there r a lot of black
ppl, but theres culture, theres big city vibe that u cant
find in backward industrial brum

btw, sorry if i offended u, i donno if u live there, but i
just think that brum is more depressing than most of the
cities in serbia

backward?

haha

typical london attitude.

by the way, isn't the juxtaposition of "backward" and
"industrial" close to being a contradiction in terms.

i don't want to get bogged down in petty squabbles over
cities, but i really think after visiting digbeth of
all places, you're hardly qualified to comment on the
(multi)culture of birmingham. you haven't seen any of the
city, really. so you don't know what you're talking about.
brixton isn't representative of london by any stretch of the
imagination - and nor are the few corners of birmingham
you've seen a full picture of the city as a whole.
besides, it's not a competition anyway. the two are
different places. i have friends that i stay with regularly
in both brum & brixton & i like 'em both in different ways.

if i read correctly and you were referring to brum as
"small", then you definitely haven't seen much/any of it.
you do realise that it's the second city here, don't you?

oh, and a friendly word of advice.. as i'm pretty sure
you're not a racist, you might want to be careful
with your wording in future; the way you said that "brixton
is dirty, and there r a lot of black ppl, but theres
culture" makes it sounds as though:
a) you see black citizens as lacking culture
b) you equate black citizens with "dirt", or you somehow
hold them responsible for generating all of it.
c) you generally view black citizens as being a drawback
rather than an asset to an urban environment.

now, i'm sure it was just a careless mistake; but you
wouldn't want to go making us thing you were a racist now,
would you?!
;D

hmm
where to start :)

it cant be typical london attitude, coz im not a londoner,
im from belgrade, and i just live here

about brum being small, i know its the second biggest, but
how do u explain seeing 3 couples twice throughout the day,
separately

i think that in brum theres nothing apart from city centre
which is the size of a third of brixton, so that everyone
gathers in centre, and ofcorse ppl r goin to get the feeling
that its small
i mean, thats probably what determines the size of the city,
in culture means

about blacks
i personally have nothing against black ppl, but i know that
majority of white ppl wouldnt like to live in black
neighborhoods because they feel scared there
and in london brixton is considered a dodgy shihole, only
because its mostly black
i personally wouldnt mind living there if i had some good
deal

and im saying this again, my english friend was even more
horrified by the city than me, and he lived all over
england...but he said he never saw anything this frustrated
and hostile in his country

but then again, maybe its just a wierd coincidence

btw where do u live

i dont know who zongamin was, no one knew who was playing,
coz they didnt have any information neither on the screens
nor in the venue
u just had to guess
totally ridiculous

and i was suprised by how bad the attendance was
