guy's site on geocities

freeipods.com

Okay, I was really really skeptical about this too, but that
geocities site seems genuine and I figure I have nothing to
lose. You have to go to this freeipods.com site and sign up
for one promotional offer (which you need a credit card for)
and you need to refer five people to the site also, and they
have to sign up for an offer, then you supposedly get a free
ipod. I think it's real because the sponsors are not like
"FREE SECURITY CAMERA!!!!," they're AOL and Columbia House
and a few others. So I signed up for a free trial of AOL,
which I will cancel in a week or so.

Is anyone willing to do this?

so all i gotta do is get 5 friends with credit cards to sign
in, sign out a week later, i receive an ipod, hmm

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I might be a total sucker. But I'm not
paying for anything. Worst case scenario is I don't get a
free iPod. Best case scenario is I do. Either way, I'm not
paying for anything.

Also, I just read that this is only valid in the US.

the way they can do this, is because they sell your info on
- see the Terms & agreements - "Only one account is
allowed per shipping address. We do this to ensure quality
leads for our advertisers."
.

Fine with me, it's a free iPod. And this isn't some sketchy
company, it's AOL. I don't care if I get junk mail.

Sorry, this is a scam!!! I heard about it on NPR two weeks
ago. THis is basiclly based around the" Bill Gates will pay
you $100 dollars for every person you refer scam." You
should be good if your credit card co. has fraud protection
like mine does...

I agree with the others - anytime someone wants your
creditcard info, you should be very careful.

that geocities site could easily have been set up by
freeipods.com themselves, how would you ever know.

You're right, I wouldn't. But I didn't give my credit card
info to freeipods.com, I only gave it to AOL. And AOL isn't
a scam.

total bs. the email addy that the geocities site gives in
order to contact him, differs from the "conformation" email
he receives from freeipod.scam.... also his page seems to
have been put together with some care... so why would this
guy go through all the trouble to help promote the so-called
free-ipod deal?!?!?! If i were the guy, with a free ipod in
hand,, i would cancell myh shit and be out! sorry... AND why
doesn't he open it!?!?! because he is selling it on EBAY!!!!
HA , yeah fucking right!!! he is returning it to the store
he bought it from after the shoot... what a fucking joke.
also check out his homepage, minus the freeipods.htm

it's just funny to me.. once it was pretty normal for people
on the internet to try to keep their privacy - now people
are selling theirs for a free iPod, and try to get 5 other
people to do the same. they can keep selling your info over
and over and over for years to come, getting MUCH more out
of it than just the cost of an iPod. they can even sell your
home-adress for "targeted promotions".

(and what I read on other forums, you really do get a
SHITload of spam..)

I regret doing this now. I can't imagine it will actually
happen and I'm cancelling my retarded AOL subscription (at
least I won't get charged). My first instinct was that this
was too good to be true, and I should've stuck with it.

It's also says on the website as step 3:
"3. We'll ship your order for free"
I don't see anywhere that the ipods are free.

and

2. "Choose your FREE iPod!"

Where else does it not say that they are free?

i'm pretty sure this is real dudes.

a couple of people i know on other messageboards have
recieved their ipod... and here's an article from a
relatively reliable source.
wired.com

and yeah, the way they do it is by having deals with all
these other spammers, and businesses... but, it is legit.

i created a trash gmail account to handle all the spam i'm
going to get, and i did the free trial with ancestory.com
(who i've been a member of before)... then i cancelled it
immediately.

it'd be super dope if one or two of you helped me out by
clicking on my referral link and signed up too... but, i can
totally understand if you don't want to fuck with it. I was
completely skeptical too until a guy i fully respect showed
pictures of his free ipod this morning.

if anyone needs a junk email account i can send them a gmail
invite too.

freeipods.com does not ask for your credit card #.

however, you have to complete one of their featured
offers... some of those do ask for your CC#... some however
do not, but the ones that do give you credit with
freeipods.com immediately.

and, i don't really care anyway. i don't give a shit about
mail spam... i usually just unpackages it, write a nasty
note on it, and send it back to the sender via their
inclosed -no postage nessesary- mailer.... that gives me a
smug sense of satisfaction.
