I didn´t have one for about 3 years because I changed the setup in my house and didn´t bother to reconnect it again and to be honest it didn´t fit well in the livingroom setup
now I changed everything again and I reconnected my surround system and subwoofer
I have to say that it is like a handicap to not have a subwoofer, it´s like the difference between mono and stereo to have no subwoofer, so for me it really is necessary I just discovered
I played some Helios and heard sounds I didn´t hear before, ofcourse the lower ones :)
is it also necessary for you?

you could be hearing sounds you've never heard before because of the subwoofers - not because the musicians really wanted you to hear it that way, so to speak.
like using the baseboosting stuff on a discman, for example.
on the other hand, what do I know.

are you trying to say that the artist didn´t meant to add the lower bass sound?

the sub isn't necessary for music. It COULD be a good supplement if your speakers are thin in the bass-section.. however, for a speaker to be "thin" in the bass-section, is not the same as it NOT sounding like a sub...
What speakers do you have? Are you mostly planning on listening to music, or watching films, or both? For film a sub (correctly set with the frequency-range and volume) can be quite useful...

Bass is quite good for physical presence and "feeling the music", and yeah, I wouldn't want to hear Saving Private Ryan in a thin telephoney way... but if you're going to crank the volume up, protect your hears. Hearing is precious and hearing loss sucks. :(

if you have run out of bran flakes, a subwoofer is most definitely necessary

With the speaker that already came with my hi-fi set I wouldn't need a subwoofer since they're able to produce some damn good bass with AHB Pro (read: bass boost) on. However, with the two extra satellites I have (midrange and high tones) a subwoofer is necessary to compensate for the surplus of non-bass tones.

*speakers, of course
Contrary to popular belief, I'd naturally not be so stupid as to get ripped off by buying a stereo set that comes with only one speaker.
