A fixture on the UK jungle scene since the early nineties,
Photek a.k.a. Rupert Parkes is best known for his role in
developing the “intelligent” drum & bass genre. Over the
course of his career as Photek, Parkes has developed a sound
that is simultaneously individual, innovative and
accessible, earning him much respect and popularity amongst
critics and music fans alike. The strength of the sound
finds foundation in Photek’s incredibly detailed drum
programming, which is then augmented by his sophisticated
sense for combining abstract sounds with jazz and classic
techno influences.

that's why i love his style...mad drum production and an
abstract approach to dnb.

um...do they?

i got 4 albums from him and all are superb only cos i rather
like to focus on drum programming.

i have in mid to do an ep solely of drum programming and
maybe some minimal melodies just to sum up the circle.

the older tunes I like (1994-1998) from both - the newer are
just a crap

photek???? good drum programming???

all the stuff ive heard from has has been the usual 2-step
stuff, nothing exciting at all, saw him at fabric too, was
expecting something great, but was just 2-step beats and
monotonous basslines

sidewinder is good though

dnb is a kind of music that's not too innovative, imo...
i didn't hear much of the innovations since the 90s,did you?

the thing u saw was his DJ SET
there is a huge difference between what artist produces and
what artist plays in his dj set
quite straightforward id say

and btw, his new tunes r brilliant, especially the house
ones, much betta than bfr...imo...

"dnb is a kind of music that's not too innovative, imo..."

i think its completely innovative by its very nature...
right now i know a lot of people who r saying its gone stale
and whatever, but i think its coming back, newer more
experimental producers u have to look out for

but yeah it was stale for a while

Photek fell off a long time ago IMHO. It's ironic that his
sound has become that which he used to criticise.

If you want to check out d&b with interesting drum
programming visit www.offshore-recordings.com Sileni -
"Twitchy Droid Leg" and Intex Systems - "Burning Bridges
(Drum Track 1)" illustrate d&b at its most innovative! 95%
of d&b is poor quality imho but there are some gems.

i couldn't agree more with you...

when you check out metalheadz u realise that dnb is uterly
boring in one way.

i got a feeling that it isn't, cos 95% of producers seem to
chop up the old skool breaks or the most famous amen break
and do the rhythmic patters.

why is it soo hard to come up with the new breaks?

DnB=Jungle. Same thing, just the media renamed it to DnB
for the masses. And yeah, Photek is the shiiiit. I love
his T-Raenon EP off the Op-ART label. Both DnB songs are
ace, but the really stomper is his Downtempo/Electro tune
"Kanei."

Anyone called Rupert but pretends they're called Photek is
clearly a shit.
