FUCK I love that hotel. I wish I had a full scale replica of it in my backyard, along with the Resident Evil 1 mansion and the spaceship from 2001. Someday.

I'd like a fullsize monolith. well the one that was buried on the moon, otherwise we're talking kilometers.

Whenever I see the monkeys rubbing it, and the guys touching it, I always imagine it feeling disgusting... like there would be a lot of friction on it as you ran a glove down it, it wouldn't be smooth and sexy. I wish that wasn't the case, because it sure is purrrrdy. It' all in my head.

i always get the impression it is perfectly smooth to such a degree that it's alarming. and it's also very cold.
stanley kubrick probably is one of my favorite directors though i tend to neglect him when talking about favorite movies/directors. so many great movies he's done.

I'm reading a biography of Stanley Kubrick at the moment and it has some nice info about the making of "2001".
the monolith was made of wood, painted with a mixture of black paint and pencil graphite. at one point Arthur C. Clarke noticed how the monolith had gotten smeared by handling and informed Kubrick, who from then on had the prop personnel take great pains to keep the surface sleek, smooth and free of dirt, dust and human fingerprints.
when they were done shooting a scene, the monolith was wrapped in cotton wool until it was needed again.
on a different note, Douglas Rain, who voiced HAL, never saw a complete script or even a bit of film before and during recording his dialogue. Kubrick just gave him his lines and spent 9 and a half hours recording them.

he (douglas rain) also til this day will not publicly comment on his work for the movie. seems it burns him to be so well known for that role as opposed to his 'serious' work (it was stage acting, i believe).
